Sub-Zero Refrigerator Repair for Built-Ins

A built-in Sub-Zero is part of the kitchen, so a warm one calls for a repair, not a trip to the showroom. We find why it lost temperature and fix it in place, from Classic and PRO units to panel-ready Designer columns and undercounter drawers.

  • Written estimate before work
  • Most repairs done in place
  • 12 months on sealed-system work
  • Open 7 days a week

How We Diagnose a Sub-Zero Refrigerator

Sub-Zero refrigerators tell you a lot before anyone opens a panel. A flashing Service or Vacuum Condenser message, EC50 on the refrigerator side or EC40 on the freezer side all point to a compressor working too long, and Sub-Zero’s advice is to check temperatures and clean the condenser first. EE and EC 06 point to a temperature sensor, which no amount of cleaning will fix. On a visit anywhere in Dallas–Fort Worth, your technician starts where Sub-Zero does: the set temperature, the door and gasket, the condenser and the kickplate clearance. Then we test the fans, defrost, sensors and electronic control, and finally the sealed system, the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and tubing that Sub-Zero’s own warranty treats separately. Dual refrigeration, which Sub-Zero says it pioneered, means two sections can fail in different ways, so we measure each one. Built-in and panel-ready units are repaired in their opening wherever possible, and you get a written estimate before any work.

Repair or replace

Repair or Replace a Sub-Zero Refrigerator?

For most Sub-Zero owners the question is repair or factory warranty, not repair or replace. Sub-Zero’s US warranty gives a full two years on parts and labor and a full five years on the sealed system, and its limited twelve-year term still supplies sealed-system parts, with labor paid by the owner. Built-in units are sized to custom cabinetry and panels, so a replacement often means carpentry too. Whatever the age of the unit, a fan, sensor, gasket, control or condenser problem is ordinary repair work.

Usually worth repairing

  • A fan, sensor, gasket or control has failed
  • Cleaning or kickplate clearance fixes the overrun
  • The cabinet, liner and panels are in good shape
  • It is built into custom cabinetry

Worth weighing carefully

  • The compressor and control have both failed
  • Repeat sealed-system repairs on an older unit
  • The cabinet liner is cracked or rusting
  • Parts for an older series are no longer stocked

Food

Sub-Zero Losing Temperature?

Keep the doors closed and measure each section. FoodSafety.gov says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours without cooling, and Sub-Zero advises against keeping food above 45°F. You can book online or by phone, and visits outside regular hours cost extra.

Sub-Zero Refrigerator Questions

Sub-Zero’s checklist covers the setting (38°F), a door or gasket that isn’t sealing, and a condenser not cleaned in the last six months. If it reads above 48°F at a 38°F setting, Sub-Zero says cleaning is unlikely to fix it and service is needed (Sub-Zero warm refrigerator troubleshooting (opens in a new tab)).

Sub-Zero recommends 38°F on electronic panels or 4 to 6 on dial controls, and says to allow 24 hours after any change.

Sub-Zero links it to excessive compressor run and a possible cooling issue. See our Service light guide for the steps.

Sub-Zero says every six to twelve months. On Classic built-ins it is behind the bottom grille; on 700 Series and undercounter units, behind the kickplate.

Classic, Designer and PRO full-size units in over-and-under, side-by-side, French-door and column layouts, older 600 and 700 Series built-ins, and undercounter refrigerators, freezers and drawers.

Usually. Fans, sensors, controls, gaskets and condenser work are done with the unit in its opening. If a sealed-system repair needs it pulled forward, we explain that in the estimate.

Sub-Zero’s US residential warranty runs a full two years on all parts and labor from the date of original installation, a full five years on the sealed system, and a limited twelve years on sealed-system parts, and it says warranty service must come from Sub-Zero factory certified service (Sub-Zero warranty (opens in a new tab)). Sub-Zero’s sealed-system parts list does not include fan motors, other electrical parts or refrigerant gas. Inside those terms, contact Sub-Zero first. ALAS is an independent company, not part of Sub-Zero’s service network; we repair Sub-Zero refrigerators and freezers once the coverage that applies has run out, or when you would simply rather hire a local independent technician.

Twelve months on compressor and refrigerant repairs for every customer. Everything else is covered for 90 days, extended to 6 months for ALAS members.

FoodSafety.gov says up to 4 hours in a closed refrigerator and about 48 hours in a full freezer (FoodSafety.gov chart (opens in a new tab)).
