How Sub-Zero Describes EC40

Sub-Zero’s EC40 answer covers the 600 Series, 648PRO, 700 Series and IC-27 integrated columns. It lists three possibilities: the freezer compressor has run excessively, a door was left ajar, or there is a problem with the sealed system, a fan or a temperature sensor. If freezer temperatures are within about 10 degrees of the set point, Sub-Zero suggests cleaning the condenser. If they are more than 10 degrees above it and no door was left open for long, it sends owners to its Factory Certified Service. The code should only be cleared, by holding the door ajar alarm key for 15 seconds, once temperatures have recovered. On 700 Series units the kickplate must not be covered or enclosed. Sub-Zero’s EC40 Checks

A freezer thermometer makes this decision much easier.

1

Compare to the set point

Within roughly 10 degrees: clean the condenser. More than 10 degrees above, with no door left open: Sub-Zero’s answer is its Factory Certified Service.

2

Check the kickplate

On 700 Series units, make sure custom toe kick or cabinetry doesn’t cover or enclose the kickplate.

3

Clear only after recovery

When temperatures are back near normal, hold the door ajar alarm key for 15 seconds. If they aren’t, leave the code for the technician.

If EC40 returns or the freezer keeps warming, the cause needs to be traced on site.→

When to Call a Technician

Schedule a repair if:

  • Freezer is 10+ degrees above setting
  • EC40 returns after clearing
  • Frost builds on the back wall
  • EC40 and EC50 show together

Freezer Still Warming?

We check freezer fans, defrost, sensors and the sealed system and hand you a written estimate before any part is replaced. ALAS is not part of Sub-Zero’s service network, so a freezer still under Sub-Zero’s warranty should be reported to Sub-Zero first.

Sub-Zero EC40 FAQs

Sub-Zero lists excessive freezer compressor run, a door left ajar, or a sealed-system, fan or temperature sensor problem.

Once temperatures have recovered, hold the door ajar alarm key for 15 seconds. Sub-Zero asks owners not to clear it while temperatures are still rising.

FoodSafety.gov says a full freezer holds about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24 hours with the door closed.

Sub-Zero lists a full five-year sealed-system warranty and limited twelve-year coverage on sealed-system parts in the US, as its residential warranty sets out.
