(469) 638-3215EC50 is the refrigerator side reporting that its compressor has worked far longer than it should. The code is worth keeping on the screen until you know whether temperatures are recovering.
Sub-Zero defines EC50 with a flashing Service light as excessive refrigerator compressor run. If refrigerator temperatures are high, Sub-Zero says a door left ajar is an unlikely cause and directs owners to its Factory Certified Service. If they are near normal, it suggests cleaning the condenser and then holding the door ajar alarm key, marked with a bell, for 15 seconds to clear the code, and it asks owners not to clear the code if temperatures don’t recover, because the logged code helps the technician. For Designer models (ID, IC and IT), Sub-Zero adds that the kickplate must not be fully covered by a custom toe kick or enclosed by cabinetry, warning that running that way, even for years, can cause sealed-system failure. Sub-Zero’s pointers, then the parts we test.
Measure the refrigerator temperature before touching any key.
High readings mean a call to Sub-Zero’s Factory Certified Service, not cleaning; Sub-Zero says leave the code on the display so it can be read.
Near-normal readings: clean the condenser and, on Designer models, confirm the kickplate isn’t hidden behind cabinetry or a custom toe kick.
Press and hold the door ajar alarm (bell) key for 15 seconds to clear EC50, then watch temperatures for a day.

Sub-Zero describes EC50 with Service flashing as excessive refrigerator compressor run.
Only once temperatures are near normal: clean the condenser, then hold the bell (door ajar alarm) key for 15 seconds, per Sub-Zero.
Sub-Zero warns that on Designer models a kickplate fully covered by a custom toe kick or enclosed in cabinetry can cause sealed-system failure, even if the unit has run that way for years.
Sub-Zero ties EC50 to the refrigerator compressor and EC40 to the freezer compressor. See our EC40 guide.
