Book Sub-Zero Ice Maker Repair
What We Look at on a Sub-Zero Ice Maker
Sub-Zero’s own guidance for a missing ice supply is thorough, and most of it is about conditions rather than broken parts. A freshly started ice maker needs 24 hours. The freezer has to sit at or below 5°F, and Sub-Zero recommends 0°F. Water has to reach it: an open supply valve, a filter seated firmly or not expired, and enough pressure, since Sub-Zero links small or hollow cubes to low pressure and suggests a booster for some reverse osmosis and well systems. Then come the mechanical checks: the shut-off arm down, its rudder arm attached, no jammed cubes and no frozen fill tube. When all of that is in order and the bin is still empty, the cause is usually a water valve, an ice maker module, a bin switch or, on undercounter units, a drain or pump problem. That is the point where our Dallas–Fort Worth technicians come in, test each part and give you a written estimate before repairing anything.
Tell us whether the ice maker is inside a refrigerator-freezer or a separate undercounter unit, and whether any light is flashing. The model number on the rating plate confirms the valve and ice maker parts.
Common ice maker problems
Sub-Zero Ice Maker Problems and Their Usual Causes
Sub-Zero’s checks for each, and what a technician tests after.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| No ice at all | Ice maker off, supply valve closed, a freezer warmer than 5°F, a raised shut-off arm, or a frozen fill tube. | Ice maker repair |
| Slower than expected | Sub-Zero rates in-unit ice makers at eight cubes every 2 to 3 hours, with 1 to 2 days to fill the bin; Max Ice helps on Classic and Designer. | Ice maker repair |
| Small or hollow cubes | Low water pressure, by Sub-Zero’s description, or a partly blocked filter or valve. | Ice maker repair |
| Undercounter ice light flashing | Automatic shut-off on UC-15I models after long cycles without filling the bin. | Ice light guide |
| 648PRO Service and Ice flashing | The refrigerator shut its ice maker down to prevent a leak or a stuck water valve. | Service and Ice guide |
| Standing water in an undercounter bin | A kinked or looped drain line, a drain pump problem, or a unit overdue for cleaning. | Ice maker repair |
| Ice melting in the bin | On undercounter units the bin isn’t refrigerated, so high room heat or direct sun melts it faster, as Sub-Zero notes. | Ice maker repair |
| Ice maker stopped with a warm freezer | A freezer cooling fault, often with EC40 on the panel. | EC40 guide |

Repair or replace
Repairing a Sub-Zero Ice Maker
An ice maker repair on a Sub-Zero is usually worth pricing, because the ice maker is a small part of an expensive built-in unit. The real question is whether the problem is the ice maker itself or what feeds it: water supply, pressure and freezer temperature account for most of Sub-Zero’s owner checks. A technician who tests both avoids replacing a good module because of a closed valve or a cold-weather pressure drop.
Usually worth repairing
- A valve, fill tube or arm has failed
- The undercounter drain or pump is blocked
- The freezer is holding 0°F to 5°F
- The rest of the unit is cooling well
Worth weighing carefully
- The freezer itself is losing temperature
- A legacy undercounter unit with repeat failures
- Water damage to surrounding cabinetry
- A sealed-system fault on an older unit

Sub-Zero Ice Maker Questions
Sub-Zero’s list starts with time (24 hours after turning it on), a freezer at or below 5°F, an open water valve and a properly seated filter, then the shut-off arm, jams and a frozen fill tube (Sub-Zero no-ice answer (opens in a new tab)).
Sub-Zero says in-unit ice makers produce eight cubes every 2 to 3 hours on average, and the bin can take 1 to 2 days to fill (Sub-Zero ice production (opens in a new tab)).
On Classic and Designer models, Max Ice temporarily increases output. Sub-Zero says standard production can’t otherwise be adjusted.
Sub-Zero points to low water pressure and suggests a plumber check it.
On UC-15I models, Sub-Zero says it is automatic shut-off. See our ice light guide.
Yes: the 15-inch Designer undercounter ice makers, with or without a pump, and earlier UC-15I models, indoors and in outdoor kitchens.
Sub-Zero’s US residential warranty runs a full two years on all parts and labor from the date of original installation, a full five years on the sealed system, and a limited twelve years on sealed-system parts, and it says warranty service must come from Sub-Zero factory certified service (Sub-Zero warranty (opens in a new tab)). Sub-Zero’s warranty excludes replacement water filters. Inside those terms, contact Sub-Zero first. ALAS is an independent company, not part of Sub-Zero’s service network; we repair Sub-Zero ice makers once the coverage that applies has run out, or when you would simply rather hire a local independent technician.
Ice maker repairs carry our 90-day warranty, extended to 6 months for ALAS members, as stated on the invoice.
