How We Approach Sub-Zero Wine Storage
Sub-Zero builds its wine storage around separate zones, and its product pages describe dual evaporators, one for each zone, to keep humidity steady along with UV-resistant tinted glass. That design is why a fault usually shows up in one zone rather than the whole cabinet. Sub-Zero’s own warm-unit checklist is the place to start: give a new unit 24 hours, since it may cool one zone at a time; clean the condenser if it hasn’t been done in three months; look for a code on the panel; confirm the setting and that the door closes fully; and remember that a large delivery of room-temperature bottles takes time to cool. When those checks don’t bring the zone back, a technician from our Dallas–Fort Worth team tests that zone’s fan, sensor and control, then the sealed system, and gives you a written estimate before any repair.
Let us know the zone that is off, the temperature you see and any code such as 40 1 09. The model number on the rating plate tells us the series and zone layout.
Common wine storage problems
Sub-Zero Wine Storage Problems and Their Usual Causes
What collectors report and where we look.

Sub-Zero Wine Storage Parts We Repair
Tested zone by zone.
Zone Evaporator Fans
The fan in each zone that moves cold air across the bottles; a weak or stopped one leaves that zone warm.
Zone Temperature Sensors
The sensors that tell the control each zone’s temperature, often behind a zone that runs warm or too cold.
Electronic Controls
Touch panels, control boards and the zone settings they hold, tested once fans and sensors check out.
Door Gaskets and Hinges
Seals and hinges on glass and panel-ready doors, where a small gap can let in warm, humid air.
Condensers and Condenser Fans
Condenser airflow, fan motors and the routine cleaning Sub-Zero’s checklist calls for.
Compressors and Sealed Systems
Refrigerant and compressor work, covered by our 12-month sealed-system warranty.
Refrigerator Drawers
The refrigerator drawers on over-and-under units that pair wine storage with fresh food.
Lighting and Door Switches
Interior lights, door switches and the door ajar sensing that runs the alarm.
Repair or replace
Is a Sub-Zero Wine Unit Worth Repairing?
Usually yes. Sub-Zero wine storage is built into cabinetry and often holds a collection that is awkward to move, so a repair in place is the practical route. Zone fans, sensors, gaskets and controls are everyday repairs. A sealed-system fault is a bigger decision, and Sub-Zero’s US warranty may still apply to the sealed system on a newer unit.
Usually worth repairing
- One zone has drifted and the other is fine
- A fan, sensor, gasket or control has failed
- The unit is built into cabinetry
- The cabinet and glass are in good shape
Worth weighing carefully
- Repeat sealed-system repairs
- Both zones failing on an older unit
- A cracked liner or damaged door frame
- Parts for a legacy model are unavailable

Sub-Zero Wine Storage Questions
Sub-Zero’s warm-unit checklist covers a new unit’s first 24 hours, a condenser not cleaned in three months, panel codes, the setting, the door and newly added bottles.
Sub-Zero lists 39°F to 65°F for Designer, Classic and UW-24 wine storage (Sub-Zero wine temperature range (opens in a new tab)).
A Designer Wine zone 1 cooling fault, too warm or too cold. See our 40 1 09 guide.
Sub-Zero says a new unit may cool one zone at a time during its first 24 hours, which is normal.
Yes, along with column and over-and-under wine units with refrigerator drawers.
Sub-Zero’s US residential warranty runs a full two years on all parts and labor from the date of original installation, a full five years on the sealed system, and a limited twelve years on sealed-system parts, and it says warranty service must come from Sub-Zero factory certified service (Sub-Zero warranty (opens in a new tab)). On some wine storage models, Sub-Zero also lists a refrigerant valve among its sealed-system parts. Inside those terms, contact Sub-Zero first. ALAS is an independent company, not part of Sub-Zero’s service network; we repair Sub-Zero wine storage once the coverage that applies has run out, or when you would simply rather hire a local independent technician.
Our standard repair warranty is 90 days (6 months for ALAS members); compressor and refrigerant work is covered for 12 months. The terms are on your invoice.

Not right away in most cases. Keep the door closed and the bottles in place while the zone is checked, since frequent handling and door openings make recovery slower. If a zone stays well above its setting for days, moving the bottles you value most to a cool, dark spot is a reasonable precaution.
With the power off, use a soft brush vacuum attachment on the condenser and avoid chemicals. Where it sits depends on the model, so check the use and care guide, or ask us to do it during a visit.
