Bosch Dishwasher E09: The Heater Isn’t Working

When a Bosch dishwasher shows E09, it has found a problem with the heater built into its pump assembly. Water may stay cold, and the dishes come out greasy or wet.

What E09 Points To on a Bosch Dishwasher

Bosch lists E09 as a heat pump internal heater fault. Bosch doesn’t define the term on its code pages; in Bosch parts listings, the dishwasher “heat pump” is the circulation pump with a built-in heater, which has nothing to do with the heat pump in a dryer or an air conditioner. Bosch’s one owner step is to cut power at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds and restore it. If E09 persists after that, Bosch says to contact its customer support. Bosch uses the same heater description for E20, and E21 for a heat pump that is blocked. Source: Bosch dishwasher code list (opens in a new tab).

The Reset Bosch Suggests

This is the only owner step Bosch gives for E09.

1

Breaker off

Switch off the circuit breaker that feeds the dishwasher and leave it off for 30 seconds.

2

Power back on

Turn the breaker back on and start a normal cycle with a light load.

3

Watch the code

If the cycle finishes with hot water and no code, the fault was momentary. If E09 returns, book service.

A code that survives the reset points to the pump assembly or the control. Bosch sends that to its support line; out of warranty, we can test it.→

When to Call a Technician

Schedule a repair if:

  • E09 returns after the breaker reset
  • Water never gets warm
  • Drying has stopped working
  • E09 alternates with E21

Bosch E09 FAQs

Bosch lists E09 as a heat pump internal heater fault or error.

Bosch’s code pages don’t define the term. In Bosch parts listings, the dishwasher “heat pump” is the circulation pump with a built-in heater, which moves the wash water and warms it. It is a different thing from a heat pump dryer.

Bosch says to cut power at the breaker for 30 seconds, then restore it. If the code stays, call support or book a technician.

Bosch lists E20 with the same heater description, E21 for a blocked heat pump and E12 for limescale in the heat pump. See our E12 guide.
