Speed Queen Dryer Repair, Gas and Electric
A Speed Queen dryer that tumbles cold or needs two cycles for one load usually has a single cause, and it isn’t always inside the cabinet. We check the dryer, its power or gas supply and the vent, then quote the fix in writing.

Speed Queen Dryer Repair Without the Guesswork
Speed Queen dryers are built to match the washers they sit beside: heavy, straightforward and meant to run for many years. That simplicity is also why their residential user’s guides don’t list display error codes the way the washers do. When a Speed Queen dryer misbehaves, the clue is the symptom. Speed Queen’s own troubleshooting starts in three places for a dryer that won’t heat: the breakers or fuses on an electric model (some homes have two, and both matter), the gas valves on a gas model, and the exhaust duct and weather hood outside. Our Dallas–Fort Worth technicians follow the same order, then test the heating circuit, safety thermostats, drive parts and controls. Because ALAS also cleans dryer vents, a blocked duct can be handled during the same visit if you approve it.
Speed Queen puts the model and serial numbers on a serial plate on the dryer. A photo of the plate, and whether the dryer runs on gas or electricity, lets the technician bring the right heating parts on the first visit.
Common dryer problems
Speed Queen Dryer Problems We Fix
Speed Queen dryers report problems by symptom rather than by code. Start with the one that matches yours.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but no heat (electric) | One of two breakers tripped or a fuse blown, an open heating element, a failed thermal fuse or a high-limit thermostat. | Dryer repair |
| Runs but no heat (gas) | The appliance or main gas valve closed, a weak igniter, worn valve coils, the flame sensor, or an open thermal fuse. | Dryer repair |
| Loads take far too long | A kinked or lint-packed duct, a weather hood flapper that sticks, a full lint filter, overloading, or heavy and light items mixed together. | Book vent cleaning |
| Won’t start at all | No power at the outlet, a door switch, a start switch, a blown thermal fuse or a drive motor that won’t turn over. | Dryer repair |
| Ends with clothes still damp | A dryness setting that doesn’t suit the load, residue on the moisture sensor, or a control misreading dryness on automatic cycles. | Speed Queen washer repair |
| Thumping, squealing or scraping | Worn drum rollers or glides, a tired idler pulley, a stretched belt, or a coin caught between the drum and the front panel. | Dryer repair |
| Drum doesn’t turn | A broken belt, a failed idler, or a motor that hums without turning. | Dryer repair |
| Steam cycles not working | On steam-equipped models such as the DR7, a fault in the steam system needs testing. Speed Queen also notes that using steam on overly damp items may result in the load not completely drying. | Speed Queen repair |

Repair or replace
Is a Speed Queen Dryer Worth Fixing?
Usually, when the fault is a heating or drive part. Elements, igniters, fuses, belts and rollers are single-part repairs, and Speed Queen backs its dryers with a three-, five- or seven-year parts and labor warranty depending on the series. The exceptions are a drum that has cracked or rusted, or wiring damaged by long overheating behind a blocked vent.
Usually worth repairing
- What failed was an element, igniter, fuse or belt
- It is inside the warranty term for its series
- It pairs with a Speed Queen washer that still runs well
- The cabinet and drum are in good condition
Worth weighing carefully
- The drum is cracked or rusted through
- Wiring shows heat damage from overheating
- Several major parts failed at once
- The repair costs more than half a new dryer

Overheating or gas smell
Speed Queen Dryer Running Hot or Smelling of Gas?
Stop a dryer that is very hot on the outside or smells scorched, and leave it off. If you smell gas, leave first: get everyone out without touching switches or using phones indoors, as Speed Queen’s safety instructions say, then call 911 and Atmos Energy from outside. Book a repair after the all-clear; after-hours visits carry an added fee.
How it works
What Happens on a Speed Queen Dryer Visit
Gas or electric?
Book online or call. Tell us the fuel type and the series (DR, DC5 or DF7), and send a photo of the serial plate if you can.
Supply, airflow and heat
We confirm the power or gas supply, check airflow at the exhaust and test the heating circuit, so an element isn’t replaced when the duct was at fault.
Written price first
Before any work, the diagnosis and the cost are written out for you. Vent cleaning, if needed, appears as a separate line item.
Test run and paperwork
Once the part is in, we run a heated cycle, confirm exhaust flow and write our 90-day repair warranty (6 months for members) on the invoice.

Speed Queen Dryer Questions
Speed Queen’s dryer user’s guide starts with the supply. On electric models, check the laundry room breakers or fuses; some homes have two, and both must be on. On gas models, make sure the equipment valve and the main gas valve are open. Then check the exhaust duct for kinks and confirm the outside hood flapper moves freely. If all of that checks out, the technician tests the element or igniter, the thermal fuse and the thermostats.
Speed Queen’s current residential dryer user’s guides don’t list display error codes; their troubleshooting is organized by symptom. Codes you may find online for home Speed Queen dryers aren’t in those guides, so we diagnose from the symptom and our meter readings.
Speed Queen lists a clogged lint filter, loads that are too large or too small, heavy items mixed with light ones, and dryness settings that don’t suit the load. A restricted duct is the other big cause. If normal loads take noticeably longer than they used to, have the vent checked.
Speed Queen’s DF7 installation literature calls for 4-inch rigid duct vented outdoors, with a maximum of 65 feet of straight run and 10 feet deducted for each elbow (Speed Queen DF7 guide (opens in a new tab)). Shorter and straighter dries faster.
Speed Queen recommends having the duct inspected after the first year and then every one to two years, and says this maintenance isn’t covered by warranty. Clean the lint filter before every load as well. ALAS offers dryer vent cleaning.
Yes. We repair gas and electric DR3, DR5, DR7, DC5 and DF7 dryers, and the dryer half of the SF7 stacked unit.
Check that it is plugged in and the breaker is on, and that the door is fully closed. If it still does nothing, the door switch, start switch, thermal fuse or motor needs testing.
In most cases, yes. Most dryer failures are a single heating or drive part, and Speed Queen dryers are built for long service. A cracked drum or heat-damaged wiring are the main reasons to replace.
It depends on the series printed on your dryer. Speed Queen lists a parts and labor warranty of 3 years on the DR3, 5 years on the DR5, DC5, DF7 and SF7, and 7 years on the DR7 (Speed Queen lineup (opens in a new tab)). Its user’s guides add two limits: in multi-user or commercial use the coverage is three years, parts only, and some service calls are billed to the owner because Speed Queen does not count them as product failures, such as plugged or kinked venting, lint cleaning inside the dryer, home electrical or gas problems, and foreign objects found in the dryer. Inside the term, register the machine and request service from Speed Queen first. ALAS is independent, not a Speed Queen service provider, so we take the calls after the term ends, and if a fault we find looks like one Speed Queen should cover, we tell you before you pay for anything.
Commercial Speed Queen dryers are covered by our commercial laundry equipment repair service. This page is for home dryers.
