Legacy started as a corporate development that EDS pieced together south of State Highway 121, roughly 2,665 acres along the Dallas North Tollway. Today the name covers Legacy West, tucked between the Sam Rayburn Tollway, the Tollway, Legacy Drive and Headquarters Drive, and Legacy Town Center, which straddles Legacy Drive on the east side of the Tollway. Toyota Motor North America’s headquarters campus is part of Legacy West.
Most people who live here are in apartments or mixed-use buildings, some with homes stacked above shops, and the Town Center plan was built around a dense residential core so workers could live near their offices. From Open Land to Business Park
Ross Perot began assembling the land in the late 1970s along the route planned for the Dallas North Tollway and hired Robbie Robinson in 1981 to lead its development. EDS moved its campus here in 1985, the same year as Frito-Lay, and J.C. Penney’s headquarters opened in 1992.
The name honors the land’s past: a century-old cemetery near its center, buffalo on the high ground and cattle drives heading north on the Shawnee Trail.
Baccus Cemetery and the Street Names
Baccus Cemetery, at 7485 Bishop Road near the Shops at Legacy, was first used in 1847 as the Cook family burial ground and took its current name around 1915. Visit Plano describes it as holding the earliest marked grave in the city.
Robinson borrowed surnames from its headstones for nearby streets, which is where Bishop, Pearson and Libby come from.
Two Walkable Centers
Legacy Town Center is a 150-acre New Urbanist district designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk. It opened around 2001 with roughly 400 apartments and a 400-room hotel.
Legacy West followed on June 2, 2017, alongside Toyota’s 100-acre campus. JPMorgan Chase and Liberty Mutual have had regional headquarters at or near the district.
