Commercial Kitchens and Bars in the Stockyards

The Stockyards National Historic District covers 98 acres, roughly bounded by 23rd, Houston and 28th Streets and the railroad, about 2.5 miles north of the Tarrant County Courthouse. Exchange Avenue is its main street. Restaurants, saloons, Western retail, entertainment venues and a hotel operate here out of historic brick buildings, several of them dating from the early 1900s.

For businesses in the district, we repair walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-in refrigerators, ice machines, cooking equipment and kitchen exhaust hoods. In a building that has been converted for restaurant use, a condensing unit or ice machine may sit in a back room, on a roof or behind a bar, so tell us where yours is and how the technician should reach it.

The Herd’s twice-daily cattle drive is part of daily life in the district. When you book, say what time suits your kitchen and where a service vehicle can stop to unload tools. The written estimate comes before any repair, and nothing is ordered or replaced without your approval.

Stockyards History and Landmarks

From Cattle Market to Historic District

The Union Stockyards were built in 1887. A coin toss settled the packing-plant sites, with construction beginning in 1902, and by 1917 the Stockyards was the largest horse and mule market in the world. Activity peaked in 1944, when 5,277,496 head were processed. Armour closed in 1962 and Swift in 1971, and the district was listed on the National Register on June 29, 1976.

The official Fort Worth Stockyards history (opens in a new tab) covers this story in more detail.

Coliseum and Exchange Building

Construction on Cowtown Coliseum began in 1907, and it hosted the first indoor rodeo. Fully refurbished in 1986 with heating and air conditioning, it now houses the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.

The Livestock Exchange Building, begun in 1902 and nicknamed the Wall Street of the West, has held the Stockyards Museum since 1989.

Mule Alley and Hotel Drover

The Horse and Mule Barns, built in 1912, were refurbished into almost 200,000 square feet of restaurants and retail as part of a $175 million redevelopment by Majestic Realty and The Hickman Companies. Hotel Drover, a 200-room hotel overlooking Marine Creek, opened on March 25, 2021.

Billy Bob’s Texas on Rodeo Plaza is billed as the world’s largest honky-tonk, with almost three acres under one roof.

Walk-In or Ice Machine Down in the Stockyards?

When a walk-in rises above safe holding temperature or the ice machine quits before a shift, both inventory and service are on the line. Call and tell us what the equipment is doing and what is stored inside.

  • Walk-in cooler or freezer above holding temperature
  • Ice machine not making ice
  • Reach-in refrigerator warming during service
  • Fryer, range or oven out of service
  • Exhaust hood fan not running

Stockyards Business Repair Questions

Tell us when you book. Share the address, which entrance to use and whether there is a back door, alley or loading area for service vehicles. If the equipment is upstairs, on the roof or in a back room, say so, because that changes what the technician carries in.

Yes. Cowtown Coliseum on East Exchange Avenue is in 76164, and we serve businesses throughout the historic district and the Northside around it. Give us the street address and business name when you call so the visit is routed correctly.

Yes. Several buildings here date from the early 1900s and have been renovated for restaurant and retail use. Describe where the walk-in, condensing unit or ice machine sits. We repair the equipment and let you know if part of the issue belongs to a plumber, electrician or building contractor.

The make, model and serial number from the equipment data plate, the current temperature reading for coolers and freezers, and when the problem began. If you keep a temperature log, have it handy. You receive a written estimate before any repair begins.
