(469) 638-3215Maytag dishwashers without a digital display report faults by blinking the Clean light. Counting the blinks gives you the code, and the code tells you what to check.
Maytag’s method: count the first set of rapid flashes, which is the F number. After a pause of 1 to 2 seconds, count the second set, which is the E number. A longer pause of about 5 seconds follows before it repeats. Maytag’s example: 7 flashes, a pause, then 1 flash is F7 E1. Write the code down before you reset anything. Exact codes vary by model. Start with the reset, then the checks for your code.
Unplug a plug-in dishwasher for 30 seconds, or switch off the breaker for 30 seconds on a hard-wired one, then restore power.
Clean the filter under running water, check the hose to the sink for kinks, and run the disposer. New install? Make sure the disposer knockout plug was removed.
Make sure the water supply valve under the sink is on and the supply hose isn’t kinked, then run a cycle.

On models without a display, Maytag uses the blinking Clean light to show an error code. Count the flashes before and after the short pause to get the F and E numbers.
Maytag says that when all cycle and option lights flash, the door was opened mid-cycle and the cycle paused. Close the door firmly until it latches. See Maytag’s article (opens in a new tab).
Maytag and Whirlpool are both Whirlpool Corporation brands, and several dishwasher codes such as F9 E1 and F8 E4 mean the same thing on both. Always confirm with your own manual.
A 30-second power cycle can clear a one-time glitch. If the same code returns, the part behind it needs diagnosis.
