Maytag Dishwasher Repair, Code by Code

Maytag dishwashers are built around what Maytag calls Dual Power Filtration: a microfilter that keeps food out of the spray water, and a stainless chopper that grinds particles small enough to drain. That design is why so many Maytag dishwasher calls trace back to the filter and drain path, and why the chopper is one of the parts Maytag covers for ten years. When something goes wrong, models without a display blink the Clean light in a two-part pattern, which Maytag explains how to read: the first group of flashes is the F number and the second group is the E number. F9 E1 points to a long drain and F8 E4 to water in the base, for example. Your technician reads the code, tests the drain pump, wash motor, heating element, float and controls, and gives you the price before any part is replaced.

Should You Repair Your Maytag Dishwasher?

Many Maytag dishwasher repairs are a pump, valve, latch or heating element, each a single part. Maytag also lists the stainless tub, nylon racks and chopper under its 10-year limited parts warranty on dishwashers made after 2017, which takes some of the larger repairs off the table. A rusted tub floor or a dishwasher needing a pump and a control together is when a new one is worth pricing.

Usually worth repairing

  • The fault is a pump, valve, latch or element
  • It was made after 2017 and the tub, racks or chopper failed
  • It fits a custom panel or tight cabinet opening
  • The tub and door are in good condition

Worth weighing carefully

  • The tub floor is rusted or cracked
  • It needs a wash motor and control at once
  • It is old and has needed several repairs
  • The quote is more than half the price of a new one

Leak

Maytag Dishwasher Leaking Under the Cabinet?

Water under a dishwasher can soak the subfloor long before it shows. Stop the cycle, cut the power and close the valve under the sink, then book a visit. After-hours visits are available at an extra charge.

Maytag Dishwasher Questions We Get Asked

Maytag’s F9 E1 steps cover it: take out the filter and rinse it under running water, check the drain hose to the sink for kinks, run the disposer and, on a new install, make sure the disposer knockout plug was removed. If water still stands, the drain pump needs testing.

Count the first set of flashes (the F number), wait through the short pause, then count the second set (the E number). Seven flashes, a pause and one flash is F7 E1. See our blink code guide.

In a Maytag, grit usually means the microfilter needs cleaning or the chopper isn’t grinding particles away. Rinse the filter, check the spray arms turn freely and use enough detergent for your water.

Maytag says the sanitizing temperature wasn’t reached. Run your kitchen tap hot first; Maytag’s minimum is 120°F. See our Sani light guide.

Maytag says to disconnect power for 30 seconds: unplug it, or switch off the breaker on a hard-wired model, then restore power.

Check the rinse aid first, and select PowerDry on models that have it. Plastics hold water more than glass. If everything stays wet, the heating element may have failed.

Mineral film can cloud glasses and build up on the filter and spray arms over time. Rinse aid and regular filter cleaning help.

On dishwashers made after 2017, Maytag’s 10-year limited parts coverage lists the stainless tub, nylon racks and chopper. Pumps, motors and controls are covered in the first year only (Maytag warranty (opens in a new tab)).

Start with Maytag if your dishwasher is in its first year, because Maytag covers all parts and labor that year. After that, Maytag’s 10-year coverage is limited to certain parts (on a dishwasher: the stainless tub, nylon racks and chopper) on products made after 2017, and labor is no longer included (Maytag 10-year limited parts warranty (opens in a new tab)). ALAS is an independent company, not a Maytag service provider. We handle out-of-warranty repairs and repairs owners choose to have done locally, and if a covered Maytag part is the problem, we will tell you so you can claim it.

Unload the dishwasher, clear the cabinet under the sink and write down the blink pattern or code.
