Whirlpool calls F9E1 a long drain: the dishwasher isn’t draining in the expected time. On models without a display, the Clean light flashes 9 times, pauses, then flashes once. Whirlpool points first to the filter, drain hose, garbage disposer and air gap. Source: Whirlpool dishwasher F9E1 support page (opens in a new tab).

You may notice one or more of these along with the code.
These are the causes Whirlpool lists and the parts a technician checks.
Try these steps in order. Switch off the dishwasher’s power before reaching into the sump.
Remove the filter, rinse it under running water and check the sump below it for glass or food debris.
Look for kinks in the drain hose, run the garbage disposer, make sure its knockout plug was removed on a new install, and clear the air gap if you have one.
Cut power for 30 seconds by unplugging it or switching off the breaker, then restore power and run a short cycle.

Whirlpool calls F9E1 a long drain. Clean the filter, check the drain hose, disposer and air gap, and reset the power for 30 seconds. If the code returns, the drain pump usually needs repair.
On a new installation that drains into a garbage disposer, the most common cause is the disposer’s knockout plug still being in place. Whirlpool lists it as one of the first checks.
Yes. Whirlpool says to use only automatic dishwasher detergent, because dish soap creates suds that interfere with draining. See our F8E4 guide for suds and leaks.
Whirlpool notes that humming without draining can point to a jammed impeller, and grinding to debris such as broken glass in the pump. No pump sound at all can point to an electrical or control problem.
