Maytag Dryer Repair, From No Heat to Slow Drying
More people search for a Maytag dryer that won’t heat than for any other Maytag problem, and the cause is spread across a few places: the dryer, the power or gas feeding it, and the vent carrying the air out. Maytag helps narrow it down. L2 on an electric model means the dryer isn’t getting full line voltage. The Check Vent light means air can’t leave fast enough. And some long cycles aren’t faults at all, because Maytag’s Extra Power button deliberately adds time, heat and tumbling, and the Pet Pro option runs a longer, cooler cycle. Our technicians sort out which one you have before anything is replaced, and because ALAS also cleans dryer vents, a clogged vent doesn’t turn into a second appointment.
Look for the Maytag model tag at the upper left on the back of the cabinet, on the frame behind the door, on the inside of the door, or behind the access panel on gas models. A photo of it, plus whether your dryer is gas or electric, tells us which heating parts to bring.
Typical Maytag dryer calls
Why Maytag Dryers Stop Drying
Start with the problem that matches yours. Gas and electric models share some causes and differ on others.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Tumbles but no heat (electric) | One of two breakers tripped, L2 low voltage, an open heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed thermostat. | Maytag L2 guide |
| Tumbles but no heat (gas) | Gas valve closed behind the dryer, a weak igniter, failed gas valve coils, a flame sensor or a blown thermal fuse. | Dryer repair |
| Check Vent light on | Crushed vent behind the dryer, a blocked outside hood, plastic or foil vent, or lint packed inside the wall. | Maytag Check Vent guide |
| Takes two cycles to dry | Restricted vent, a full lint screen, overloading, or a heating part that cycles weakly. Extra Power and Pet Pro also run longer by design. | Maytag Check Vent guide |
| Won’t start or shuts off | Door switch, start switch, thermal fuse, drive motor or a control fault. A blown fuse often follows a blocked vent. | Dryer repair |
| Squealing, thumping or scraping | Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, drive belt or drum glides. A coin or clip caught at the drum edge can scrape too. | Dryer repair |
| Drum won’t turn | A broken belt, failed idler, or a drive motor that hums without turning. | Dryer repair |
| Ends early with damp clothes | Moisture sensor bars coated with dryer sheet residue, or a control misreading dryness. Wiping the bars often helps. | Maytag appliance repair |

Repair or replace
Is This Maytag Dryer Worth the Repair?
Dryers are simpler machines than washers, and the parts that fail most, such as elements, igniters, fuses and belts, are inexpensive compared with a new dryer. On Maytag dryers made after 2017, the drive motor and drum also carry a 10-year limited parts warranty. A cracked drum or a dryer that has overheated badly enough to damage wiring is where replacement makes sense.
Usually worth repairing
- The failed part is an element, igniter, fuse or belt
- It was made after 2017 and the motor or drum failed
- It matches a washer that is still working well
- It is a commercial-grade or Pet Pro model
Worth weighing carefully
- The drum is cracked or rusted through
- Wiring is heat-damaged from long overheating
- Several parts failed at once on an old dryer
- The quote is more than half the cost of a new dryer

Overheating
Maytag Dryer Too Hot or Smelling of Gas?
A dryer that is very hot on top or smells scorched should be turned off and left off. If you smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. After-hours dryer service is available at an extra charge.
How it works
How a Maytag Dryer Visit Works
Tell us gas or electric
Book online or call. Gas or electric, the model tag photo and any light or code on the panel help us arrive prepared.
Heat, airflow and power
We measure the heating circuit, check the vent airflow and confirm the supply, so you don’t pay for an element when the vent was the problem.
Clear price, your call
You see the diagnosis and the price in writing. If the vent needs cleaning, that is quoted separately.
Test dry and done
After the repair we run the dryer with heat, check exhaust airflow and note the warranty on your invoice.

Maytag Dryer Questions We Get Asked
On electric models, start at the breaker panel: Maytag says the dryer uses two breakers, and if the heating side trips the drum still turns. L2 on the display points the same way. On gas models, make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open. After that, the element or igniter, thermal fuse and thermostats need testing.
Maytag says it means airflow is restricted. Check behind the dryer for a crushed vent and make sure the outside hood opens; see our Check Vent guide.
Extra Power adds time, heat and tumbling on purpose, and the Pet Pro option runs a longer cycle. If normal cycles take much longer than they used to, a clogged vent is the most common cause, followed by a weak heating part.
Maytag says low or no line voltage. The dryer runs but won’t heat. Reset both breakers; if it returns, the cord, outlet or terminal block needs checking. See our L2 guide.
Yes. Maytag says house vent cleaning isn’t done by appliance technicians and isn’t covered by warranty, but ALAS does both, so we can repair the dryer and clean the vent in one trip.
Moisture-sensing dryers end the cycle when the sensor bars feel dry clothes. Dryer sheet residue on the bars can fool them; wipe them with a damp cloth. If that doesn’t help, the sensing or control needs testing.
Yes, along with Pet Pro, front-load and stacked Maytag dryers, gas or electric.
Usually. Most dryer repairs are a single heating or drive part. On dryers made after 2017, Maytag’s 10-year limited parts coverage also includes the drive motor and drum.
Start with Maytag if your dryer is in its first year, because Maytag covers all parts and labor that year. After that, Maytag’s 10-year coverage is limited to certain parts (on a dryer: the drive motor and dryer drum) on products made after 2017, and labor is no longer included (Maytag 10-year limited parts warranty (opens in a new tab)). ALAS is an independent company, not a Maytag service provider. We handle out-of-warranty repairs and repairs owners choose to have done locally, and if a covered Maytag part is the problem, we will tell you so you can claim it.
Empty the dryer, clean the lint screen and make room to pull it away from the wall. Leave the vent connected so we can check airflow.
