GE Oven, Range and Cooktop Repair
ALAS repairs GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram ovens and ranges in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth, including freestanding and slide-in gas and electric ranges, single and double wall ovens, and gas, electric and induction cooktops. GE ovens report faults as F codes: F2 means the oven got hotter than a preset limit, F3 usually means the oven sensor, and F9 means a part in the door lock circuit failed. GE says switching the oven off at the breaker for a minute or two sometimes clears a code; if it doesn’t, keep the oven off at the breaker until it is repaired. Your technician tests the bake and broil elements or igniters, sensor, door lock, keypanel, control and wiring on your model before naming the failed part. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
On a GE range, the model label is usually behind the oven door on the front frame, inside the storage drawer or under the cooktop; on a wall oven it is inside the door on the front face. Telling us whether it is gas or electric and sending a photo of the label helps us bring the right parts.
Common oven and range problems
Common GE Oven and Range Problems and What Causes Them
These are the GE oven and range problems we are called about most, with the parts a technician checks first and the codes that often appear with them.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Electric oven not heating, burners work | Bake or broil not selected, knobs swapped, self-clean latch locked, cracked bake element, sensor or control fault. | Oven repair |
| Gas oven not heating, burners work | Gas regulator off after an install, door locked, Glo-Bar igniter not glowing, gas valve or control fault. | Oven repair |
| Running too hot or F2 | GE says F2 means the oven exceeded a preset temperature threshold. A sensor, relay or control fault is usually behind it. | GE oven F2 guide |
| Wrong temperatures or F3 | GE says F3 and F4 usually mean the oven sensor needs replacing. Food burns or stays raw. | GE oven F3 guide |
| Door locked after self-clean or F9 | GE says F9 means a component failed in the door lock circuit. Lock motor, switch or wiring. | GE oven F9 guide |
| Keypad not responding (F0, F1, F7) | GE says these usually mean a keypanel problem, often needing a new keypanel. | Oven repair |
| Gas burners clicking or not lighting | Clogged burner ports, caps not seated, wet igniter after a spill, failed spark switch or module. | Cooktop repair |
| Electric burner or glass cooktop problems | Burned-out surface element, failed switch, loose terminal or cracked glass top. | Cooktop repair |

Repair or replace
Is Your GE Oven or Range Worth Repairing?
Most GE oven and range repairs are single parts, such as a bake element, igniter, sensor, door lock or keypanel, and they cost far less than a new range. Wall ovens, slide-in ranges and Café or Monogram models cost more to replace, which often tips the decision toward repair. A failed control board on an older range is the repair worth weighing. You get the cost first, and when replacement makes more sense, we will say so.
Usually worth repairing
- The range or oven is under about 15 years old
- The problem is an element, igniter, sensor, lock or keypanel
- It is a wall oven, slide-in, Café or Monogram model
- The cavity, door glass and cooktop are in good condition
Worth weighing carefully
- The range is more than 15 years old
- The control board has failed and parts are hard to find
- The oven cavity or cooktop glass is badly damaged
- Repair cost is more than half the price of a new range

Smell Gas Near Your GE Range?
If you smell gas, leave the home right away. Don’t use light switches, phones or anything that could spark inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. An oven that keeps heating with an F2 code, sparks or smells like burning wiring should be switched off at the breaker until it is repaired, as GE advises for F codes. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

GE Oven and Range Repair Questions
GE suggests making sure Bake or Broil is set, the knobs are in their correct spots and the self-clean latch is unlocked. With the power off at the breaker, look at the bake element for cracks or breaks. If those check out, the element, sensor or control needs repair. See GE’s electric oven checks (opens in a new tab).
GE says to check that the main gas regulator is on (common after an install), Bake or Broil is set and the door is unlocked. Then look for a red glow from the Glo-Bar igniter; if there is no glow, the igniter, control or another electrical part may be faulty. See GE’s gas oven checks (opens in a new tab).
GE says F2 (or F20) means the oven temperature went above a preset threshold for an unknown reason. Switch the oven off at the breaker, and keep it off until it is repaired if the code returns. See our F2 guide.
GE says F3 and F4 usually mean the oven sensor needs replacing. See our F3 guide.
GE says F9 (or FC) means a component has failed in the door lock circuit. It often shows up around a self-clean cycle. See our F9 guide.
GE says turning the range or wall oven off at the breaker for a minute or two sometimes clears a code. If the code returns, schedule service and keep the oven off at the breaker until then; you can switch it on briefly to use the surface units.
Neither is a fault. GE says LOC means the child lockout is on, and a backwards C means Sabbath mode is set. Your Owner’s Manual shows how to turn each off.
Usually, yes. Elements, igniters, sensors, door locks and keypanels are single-part repairs. Wall ovens, slide-in ranges and Café or Monogram models are especially worth repairing because they cost more to replace.
Yes. We repair GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram ranges, wall ovens and cooktops. Tell us the model number when you book.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not a GE authorized service provider. GE says its warranty period is typically one year (see your Owner's Manual), and GE's own service brand, Bodewell, handles warranty repairs, so contact GE first if your oven is still covered (GE warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair GE ovens that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
We repair GE ovens, ranges and cooktops across Dallas–Fort Worth, including Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Dallas, Richardson, Coppell, Southlake, Keller and Grapevine. Enter your ZIP code in the service area section to check coverage.
