GE says F2 (or F20) means the oven temperature exceeded a preset threshold for an unknown reason. Because the oven got hotter than it should, GE’s advice is to reset at the breaker and, if the code returns, keep the oven off at the breaker until it is repaired. GE says codes vary by model, so confirm yours in your Owner’s Manual. Source: GE oven error codes (opens in a new tab).

You may notice one or more of these along with the code.
GE doesn’t name one part. These are the areas a technician tests.
Treat F2 as a safety issue. Don’t keep using an oven that overheats.
GE says switching the range or wall oven off at the breaker for a minute or two sometimes clears a code. Then turn it back on and watch the display.
If the code returns, GE says to schedule service and keep the oven off at the breaker until then. You can switch it on briefly to use the surface units.
Don’t open panels or touch the sensor while the oven is hot. Note when the code appeared, for example during bake or self-clean, to tell the technician.

No. An oven that exceeds its temperature limit can overheat. GE advises keeping it off at the breaker until it is repaired, though you can switch it on briefly to use the surface units.
Self-clean runs the oven at its highest temperatures, so a sensor or control that reads wrong is most likely to trip the limit then. A technician tests the sensor, relays and control to find out why.
No. On a GE microwave, GE says F2 means a shorted thermal sensor. See our GE microwave repair page.
