GE Over-the-Range and Built-In Microwave Repair

ALAS repairs GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram over-the-range and built-in microwaves in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth. Over-the-range models are worth repairing more often than countertop units, because they double as your range hood, with a vent fan and cooktop light, and replacing one means matching the mounting and cabinet opening. GE microwaves show F codes when a sensor or control fails: F1 and F2 for the thermal sensor, F3 for the touch pad, F4 and F5 for the humidity sensor, and 18 for the electronic control. GE says any code calls for a trained technician. A microwave can store a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so your technician handles the magnetron, high-voltage parts, door switches and controls safely. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Repair or replace

Is Your GE Microwave Worth Repairing?

Over-the-range and built-in GE microwaves are often worth repairing, because replacing one means matching the mounting, vent and cabinet opening. A door switch, touch pad, sensor, fuse or turntable motor is a modest repair. A magnetron or control board on an older unit is the one to weigh against replacement. You get the cost first, and when replacement makes more sense, we will say so.

Usually worth repairing

  • It is an over-the-range or built-in model
  • The problem is a door switch, fuse, touch pad, sensor or fan
  • The microwave is under about 8 to 10 years old
  • The cavity paint and door are in good condition

Worth weighing carefully

  • It is a basic countertop model
  • The microwave is more than 10 years old
  • The magnetron and control board have both failed
  • The cavity is rusted or the door is damaged

Safety first

GE Microwave Sparking or Smoking?

Stop using a microwave that sparks, smokes, smells like burning or runs with the door open. Keep the door closed if there is smoke or fire inside, switch off its breaker, and call us. Don’t open the cabinet: GE warns that the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the microwave is unplugged. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

GE Microwave Repair Questions

GE suggests making sure Timer wasn’t selected by mistake and opening and closing the door firmly so the safety switches engage. Beyond that, GE gives no do-it-yourself repair because of the high-voltage parts, and recommends service. The magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a door switch is usually the cause. See GE’s not heating page (opens in a new tab).

GE lists F1 (open thermal sensor from excessive cavity heat), F2 (thermal sensor shorted), F3 (touch pad shorted), F4 and F5 (humidity sensor), F6 (temperature probe) and F10 (touch screen). Switching off the breaker for about 30 seconds may clear a code, but GE says a trained technician should diagnose any code that returns. See GE’s microwave code list (opens in a new tab).

GE says power watch code 18 means a problem with the electronic control, which needs a technician.

GE says 888, 8888 or PF appears after first installation or a power failure. Press Cancel/Off or Clear/Off and reset the clock.

No. The same code can mean something different on a microwave and an oven. For example, F2 is a shorted thermal sensor on a GE microwave, but a temperature over its limit on a GE oven. See our GE oven F2 guide for ovens.

We don’t recommend it. GE warns that the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the microwave is unplugged, and the door switches are safety parts. Simple checks such as the breaker and the Timer setting are fine; leave the cabinet closed.

Often, yes. An over-the-range microwave is also your range hood and has to fit the cabinet opening and mounting, so a door switch, touch pad, sensor or fan repair usually costs less than buying and installing a new one. A basic countertop model is usually cheaper to replace.

ALAS is an independent repair company, not a GE authorized service provider. GE says its warranty period is typically one year (see your Owner's Manual), and GE's own service brand, Bodewell, handles warranty repairs, so contact GE first if your microwave is still covered (GE warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair GE microwaves that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
