Downtown Wylie exists where it does because of a railroad. In 1886 the settlement known as Nickelville picked up and moved about half a mile north to meet the new Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe line, took the name Wylie that June and incorporated the following year. Ballard Avenue still runs beside the old tracks, north from SH 78 toward Brown Street, and its blocks hold storefronts, restaurants and some of the oldest houses in the city.

A Town That Followed the Tracks
The state historical marker at South Ballard Avenue and SH 78 tells the founding story: the 1886 move to the Santa Fe line, the name taken from railroad right-of-way agent W.D. Wylie, incorporation in 1887 and a second railroad, the St. Louis and Southwestern, starting work in 1888.
By the 1920s the town was known as the “Onion Capital of the United States.” The same marker notes that the TV series Dallas began filming in Wylie in 1981.
Landmark Houses on Ballard and Jackson
Brown Cottage, at Jefferson Street and North Jackson Avenue, dates to 1889 and was moved to its present lot in 1903. It is Folk Victorian with Carpenter Gothic details.
At 405 North Ballard, the E.A. and Lydia Housewright House is a Queen Anne cottage designated in 2023. Its marker credits a later owner, William McDonald, with bringing electricity to Wylie.
Festivals on the Avenue
Bluegrass on Ballard is a free yearly festival with a car, truck and motorcycle show, organized by the Wylie Downtown Merchants Association, the City of Wylie and the Bluegrass Heritage Foundation. The 2026 edition was held May 30. The street has also hosted Boo on Ballard, a Halloween event.
