When a Maytag Ice Maker Goes Quiet
Ice depends on three things working together: water reaching the ice maker, a freezer cold enough to freeze it, and an ice maker that fills, freezes, ejects and refills on cue. Maytag’s own troubleshooting starts with the first two, and so should you. The supply valve needs to be fully open, the refrigerator shouldn’t be pushed so far back that the line pinches, and the freezer should be set between 0°F and 5°F. Maytag also points out that ice makers sometimes get switched off by accident and that a filter that isn’t seated can stop the water. If those all check out, the water inlet valve, the ice maker assembly, the fill tube or the dispenser parts are where a technician looks next.
Write down where your ice maker sits, in the freezer or in the door, and whether water from the dispenser still flows. Those two answers split the problem into water supply, freezer temperature or the ice maker itself, which tells us what to bring.
Ice maker complaints
Maytag Ice Maker Problems and Where They Start
Match your symptom, then try the related check before you book.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| No ice at all | Ice maker switched off, supply valve closed, line pinched behind the fridge, freezer too warm, or a failed valve or ice maker. | Ice maker repair |
| Small, hollow or few cubes | Low water flow from a clogged filter or partly closed valve, low household pressure, or a weak inlet valve. | Ice maker repair |
| Ice stopped after a filter change | A filter not fully seated. Maytag’s test: remove it and try the dispenser; if water flows, reinstall it properly. | Ice maker repair |
| Ice clumped or jammed | Ice left sitting too long, a door not closing fully, a frozen fill tube, or a warm freezer letting cubes melt and refreeze. | Ice maker repair |
| Dispenser won’t release ice | A jam in the chute, a frozen auger, a failed auger motor or dispenser switch, or ice welded in the bin. | Ice maker repair |
| Water leaking near the ice maker | A cracked fill tube, an overfilling valve, a leaking supply line connection or a dispenser drip. | Refrigerator repair |
| Ice tastes or smells off | An old filter, stale ice, or odors from open food in the freezer. Maytag suggests changing the filter about every 6 months. | Ice maker repair |
| Freezer warm and ice melting | This is a cooling problem rather than an ice maker one: fans, defrost or sealed system. | Maytag refrigerator repair |

Repair or replace
Is an Ice Maker Repair Worth It?
Almost always. An ice maker or water valve is a self-contained part, and replacing one costs far less than a new refrigerator. The only time we suggest otherwise is when the ice maker is a symptom of a refrigerator that is failing in other ways, such as a sealed-system problem on an older unit.
Usually worth repairing
- The refrigerator itself cools normally
- The fault is the ice maker, valve, line or dispenser
- The rest of the refrigerator is in good shape
- You rely on the dispenser every day
Worth weighing carefully
- The freezer can’t hold 0°F to 5°F
- The refrigerator also needs major cooling repairs
- The liner around the ice maker is cracked
- Several parts failed on an older unit

Maytag Ice Maker Questions We Get Asked
Maytag’s checks, in order: make sure the water line is connected and the valve fully open, the refrigerator isn’t pinching the line against the wall, the freezer is set between 0°F and 5°F and the ice maker is switched on. See Maytag’s troubleshooting (opens in a new tab).
If your model has a reset button, Maytag says to press and hold it for a few seconds. If it doesn’t, unplug the refrigerator for one minute and plug it back in.
A filter that isn’t seated can block water. Maytag’s test is to remove the filter and try the dispenser; if water flows without it, reinstall the filter until it locks.
Maytag says every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or sooner with heavy use or poor water quality.
Usually low water flow: a clogged filter, a partly closed valve or low household pressure. If those are fine, the water inlet valve may be weak.
The checks above are safe for any owner. Replacing a valve or ice maker means working with water and electrical connections inside the refrigerator, which is a technician job.
No. Maytag’s 10-year limited parts coverage on refrigerators lists the compressor. Ice makers are covered in the first year along with all other parts and labor.
Yes, along with freezer-mounted ice makers on side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer models.
Start with Maytag if your refrigerator is in its first year, because Maytag covers all parts and labor that year. After that, Maytag’s 10-year coverage is limited to certain parts (on a refrigerator: the compressor) on products made after 2017, and labor is no longer included (Maytag 10-year limited parts warranty (opens in a new tab)). ALAS is an independent company, not a Maytag service provider. We handle out-of-warranty repairs and repairs owners choose to have done locally, and if a covered Maytag part is the problem, we will tell you so you can claim it.
Empty the ice bin, leave space to pull the refrigerator forward and know where the water shutoff is.
Most of our ice maker calls come from Plano, Frisco, Allen and McKinney, and we also cover Dallas, Richardson, Coppell, Grapevine, Southlake and Keller. Your ZIP code in the section below confirms it.
