GE Washer Repair for Top-Load and Front-Load Models
ALAS repairs GE and GE Profile washers in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth, including agitator and impeller top-loads, front-load washers, stacked laundry centers and the GE Profile all-in-one combo. Newer GE washers report problems with short messages: H2O SUPPLY when water isn’t coming in, UE when the load is unbalanced, dE when the lid is open, and a Lid Locked light after three cycles started without opening the lid. Many no-drain and no-spin calls turn out to be a kinked hose, a clogged pump filter or a normal pause, which is why your technician checks the hoses, drain pump, lid lock or door lock, water valves, drive parts and controls on your model before naming the failed part. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
On a GE top-load washer, the model label is usually under the lid near the right hinge or on the back of the control panel. On a front-load washer it is inside the door on the wash compartment face, or on the lower right side. A photo of the label and any message on the display helps us bring the right parts.
Common washer problems
Common GE Washer Problems and What Causes Them
These are the GE washer problems we are called about most, with the parts a technician checks first and the messages that often appear with them.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Not draining or water left in the tub | Kinked or clogged drain hose, drain too high, clogged house drain, clogged pump filter on front-access models, failed drain pump. | Washer repair |
| Not spinning | Lid open or unbalanced load (UE), a normal pause, washer not level, drain problem, worn drive parts, motor or control fault. | GE washer UE guide |
| Lid locked or door won’t open | Lid Locked light after three cycles without opening the lid, the lid lock engaged mid-cycle, a front-load door that stays locked until it drains, or a failed lock. | GE washer lid lock guide |
| H2O SUPPLY or no water | Water valves turned off, kinked inlet hoses, clogged inlet screens, a failed water valve, or on front loads a pressure sensor problem. | GE washer H2O SUPPLY guide |
| Leaking water | Loose or cracked hose, too much detergent, torn front-load door boot, drain pump or tub seal. FE means water reached a critical level. | Washer repair |
| Loud banging or shaking | Unbalanced load, washer not level, worn suspension, failed tub bearing or an object caught in the pump. | GE washer UE guide |
| Won’t start or CAnCELEd | Paused more than 24 hours, a 4-minute lockout after an error, lid switch, control lock, or a control that needs a reset. | GE appliance repair |
| Musty odor or residue | Detergent and softener buildup, damp front-load door seal, clogged pump filter or a slow drain. | Washer repair |

Repair or replace
Is Your GE Washer Worth Repairing?
Many GE washer calls are drain, lid lock, water valve or hose problems, and those are among the simplest repairs. A drain pump, lid lock or water valve is a single part. A failed tub bearing, or a control board plus motor on an older washer, is where replacement is worth weighing. You get the cost first, and when the repair approaches half the price of a new washer, we will say so.
Usually worth repairing
- The washer is under about 10 years old
- The problem is a pump, lock, valve, hose or sensor
- The tub and cabinet are free of rust and damage
- It is a front-load, Profile or stacked unit that costs more to replace
Worth weighing carefully
- The washer is more than 10 to 12 years old
- The tub bearing has failed and the tub is noisy or loose
- The control board and motor have both failed
- Repair cost is more than half the price of a new washer

Water leak
GE Washer Leaking or Full of Water?
A washer leaking onto the floor or stuck full of water can damage floors and the room below. GE says that when FE appears, water has reached a critical level: turn off the water and power to the washer, then call for service. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

GE Washer Repair Questions
GE says pauses of up to 3 minutes are normal, so wait before you assume it is stuck. Then check the drain hose for kinks and make sure the drain isn’t too high. If you pour a quart of water into the standpipe and it won’t drain, the house drain is clogged and needs a plumber. On front-load models with a front-access pump filter, clean the filter. See GE’s top-load (opens in a new tab) and front-load (opens in a new tab) drain checks.
Close the lid, redistribute the load and make sure the washer is level. GE also says to wait out normal pauses and check the breaker. If the pump and motor run but the tub won’t spin, GE says a service call is needed. See our UE guide.
The lid locks during parts of the cycle and stays locked until the basket stops. GE says the Lid Locked light also comes on after three cycles started without opening the lid; open and close the lid and start a new cycle. Our lid lock guide covers the details.
GE says water isn’t entering the washer. Check that both water valves are on, especially after an install or a trip. The washer then waits 4 minutes before you can restart it, and unplugging it restarts that timer. See our H2O SUPPLY guide.
GE says FE means water has reached a critical level. Turn off the water and power to the washer and call for service.
GE’s control reset is to cut power for 2 minutes, then restart the cycle. A reset clears a control glitch, but if a message returns, the part behind it needs repair.
Usually, yes. Drain pumps, lid locks, water valves and sensors are single-part repairs. A failed tub bearing or several major failures on an older washer is when replacement may make more sense.
Yes. We repair GE and GE Profile top-load and front-load washers, stacked laundry centers and the GE Profile all-in-one washer-dryer. Tell us the model number when you book.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not a GE authorized service provider. GE says its warranty period is typically one year (see your Owner's Manual), and GE's own service brand, Bodewell, handles warranty repairs, so contact GE first if your washer is still covered (GE warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair GE washers that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
Write down the message and the model number, and remove the laundry if you can. If the washer is full of water, unplug it and turn off both valves. Don’t force a locked lid or door.
We repair GE washers across Dallas–Fort Worth, including Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Dallas, Richardson, Coppell, Southlake, Keller and Grapevine. Enter your ZIP code in the service area section to check coverage.
