GE Dryer Repair for Electric and Gas Models

ALAS repairs GE and GE Profile dryers in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth, including electric and gas models, stacked laundry centers and the dryer side of GE Profile combos. Many GE dryers have a vent sensor that shows Check Vent when airflow is low, and GE says a blocked vent keeps heat and moisture in the drum, lengthens drying and is a safety issue. GE also notes an electric dryer needs a dedicated 240V circuit: it will run on 120V but won’t heat. Your technician tests the venting, heating element or gas burner, thermal fuse, thermostats, belt, rollers, door switch and controls before naming the failed part. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Repair or replace

Is Your GE Dryer Worth Repairing?

Most GE dryer repairs are single parts: a heating element, thermal fuse, igniter, belt, roller or terminal block. Many long-drying calls are a clogged vent, which needs cleaning rather than parts. A worn drum or several major failures on an older dryer is when replacement is worth weighing. When repair costs approach half the price of a new dryer, we will say so.

Usually worth repairing

  • The dryer is under about 10 to 12 years old
  • The problem is a heater, fuse, igniter, belt or roller
  • It is a stacked unit or one half of a matched pair
  • The drum and cabinet are free of rust and damage

Worth weighing carefully

  • The dryer is more than 12 years old
  • The drum or bearing is badly worn or damaged
  • The motor and control board have both failed
  • Repair cost is more than half the price of a new dryer

Safety first

GE Dryer Overheating, Burning Smell or Gas Smell?

A dryer that is too hot to touch, smells like burning or trips the breaker should not be used until it has been checked, and lint in the dryer or vent is a common cause of dryer fires. If you smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the home right away without using light switches or phones inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. GE also warns never to run a gas dryer without its vent connected. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

GE Dryer Repair Questions

GE says an electric dryer needs a dedicated 208V or 240V circuit; it will run on 120V but won’t heat. Flip the breaker fully off and on, since it can be partly tripped, and choose a heated dry cycle rather than fluff. GE also suggests checking the terminal block and cord for burned or loose connections. If it still won’t heat, book a repair. See GE’s electric dryer checks (opens in a new tab).

GE says to confirm a heated cycle is selected, the dryer has its dedicated 120V outlet and the gas line is on, which is often the issue after an install. If the gas is on and there is still no heat, GE says to contact service. The igniter or gas valve coils are common causes.

GE says the sensor has detected low airflow out of the dryer, which means the vent is blocked. Clean the vent as soon as possible. Our Check Vent guide covers the steps.

GE points first to the venting: 4-inch rigid metal vent works best, flexible metal is slower, and white plastic flex shouldn’t be used. Clean the lint filter every load and the ductwork every year. An electric dryer on 120V can take up to three times longer. See GE’s slow drying checks (opens in a new tab).

On some 2019 and newer GE dryers, GE says 1 means the dryer is set for electric and 2 for gas. If the wrong setting is selected, the dryer may not start or tumble properly.

Yes. ALAS cleans dryer vents as well as repairing dryers, which helps when Check Vent alerts and long drying times come from a clogged duct. GE says to clean the vent at least once a year.

Usually, yes. Elements, fuses, igniters, belts and rollers are single-part repairs. A worn drum or several major failures on an older dryer is when replacement may make more sense.

ALAS is an independent repair company, not a GE authorized service provider. GE says its warranty period is typically one year (see your Owner's Manual), and GE's own service brand, Bodewell, handles warranty repairs, so contact GE first if your dryer is still covered (GE warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair GE dryers that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.

Stop using the dryer if it smells hot or burning. Otherwise clean the lint filter, check the duct behind the dryer for kinks and note the model number. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
