Microwave Repair Done Safely by Trained Technicians
A microwave that hums but leaves food cold, sparks inside, or stops responding to the keypad is more than an inconvenience. Microwaves store high voltage even when unplugged, so internal repairs should always be done by a trained technician. ALAS Appliance Repair has been repairing microwaves for Dallas–Fort Worth families since 2019, including over-the-range, built-in, drawer, convection and speed-cook combination models from GE, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Bosch, Sharp, Wolf and other major brands.
Every visit starts with a full diagnosis. We test the door switches, fuse, magnetron, high-voltage diode and capacitor, turntable, controls, and on over-the-range models the vent fan and lights. Then we explain the problem and your repair options before any work begins. If you go ahead, the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair.

Repair or replace
Repair or Replace Your Microwave?
Most microwaves last about 8 to 10 years. Over-the-range, built-in, drawer and combination models usually cost enough to replace and install that a repair makes sense. Most low-cost countertop models are cheaper to replace, and we will tell you honestly.
Usually worth repairing
- It is an over-the-range, built-in, drawer or combination model
- The microwave is under 7 years old
- The problem is a door switch, fuse, waveguide cover, turntable motor or fan
- The interior cavity is free of rust and peeling paint
Worth weighing carefully
- It is a basic countertop microwave
- The microwave is more than 9 years old
- Rust or peeling paint inside the cavity is causing sparks
- The magnetron and control board have both failed

Microwave Repair FAQs
The most common causes are a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, a faulty door switch, or a failed thermal cutoff. These parts carry dangerous voltage, even when the microwave is unplugged, so stop using it and have a trained technician diagnose it.
Sparking usually comes from metal or foil, food splatter, or a burned or greasy waveguide cover, the small panel on the inside wall. Chipped interior paint and a damaged stirrer can also cause arcing. A worn waveguide cover is one of the most common and affordable microwave repairs. Stop using the microwave until it has been checked.
Over-the-range, built-in, drawer and combination microwaves are usually worth repairing, because replacing them costs more and often requires installation. Most basic countertop microwaves are cheaper to replace. Our technician will tell you honestly which makes more sense for your model.
We do not recommend it. The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a dangerous charge long after it is unplugged. Safe checks you can do are resetting the breaker, reseating the glass tray, turning off the control lock and replacing light bulbs. Leave anything inside the cabinet to a trained technician.
Check that the glass tray and roller ring sit flat on the coupler. If they do, the usual causes are a worn turntable motor or a broken coupler, both straightforward repairs.
Check the breaker and make sure the control lock is off. If those are fine, the usual causes are a blown fuse, a failed door switch or latch, or a faulty control board. A blown fuse often points to a door switch problem, so we check both.
Burned-out bulbs, a failed fan motor or switch, or a control board fault are the usual causes. Many over-the-range microwaves also start the fan on their own when the cooktop below gets hot. That is a normal safety feature, not a malfunction.
Codes vary by brand. For example, GE F3 and Samsung SE usually point to a shorted keypad or touch control, and a door message that will not clear usually means a failed door switch or latch. Tell us the code when you book.
A soft hum is normal. A loud buzz, especially with little or no heat, usually means a failing magnetron or high-voltage diode. Grinding or clicking often comes from the turntable motor, stirrer or cooling fan.
Overheating from blocked vents, a failed thermal cutoff, worn door switches or a control board fault can shut a microwave off mid-cycle. A microwave that turns on by itself should be unplugged right away and checked.
Yes. We repair microwave drawers from Sharp, Wolf, Bosch and GE, convection and speed-cook microwaves, and wall oven and microwave combinations.
Most microwaves last about 8 to 10 years. Keeping the interior clean, replacing over-the-range grease filters and not running it empty help a microwave last longer.
The cost depends on the problem and the part. We start with a diagnosis, then give you a clear repair estimate before any work begins. If you go ahead with the repair, the diagnostic fee is credited toward it. If you decide not to repair, you pay only the diagnostic fee.
Repairs carry a 90-day warranty for non-members and 6 months for ALAS members. The exact coverage is written on your invoice.
