Book Your GE Refrigerator Repair
GE Refrigerator Repair for Every Style
ALAS repairs GE refrigerators in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth, including GE, GE Profile and Café French door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer models, and Monogram built-ins. GE refrigerators flash a code when the control detects a problem: dE means the defrost system hasn’t run properly in the last 24 hours, FF means frozen food may be thawing, and CC means the temperature isn’t right. A warm fresh-food section with a cold freezer usually points to airflow or defrost rather than the compressor, so your technician checks the controls, fans, defrost heater and sensors, door seals and condenser before testing the sealed system. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, nothing is repaired until you approve it, and sealed-system repairs carry a 12-month warranty.
GE puts the model label inside the fresh-food section: on a side or back wall, near the ceiling or behind the crisper drawers, depending on the style. GE and GE Profile model numbers always begin and end with a letter. A photo of the label when you book helps us bring the right parts.
Common refrigerator problems
Common GE Refrigerator Problems and What Causes Them
These are the GE refrigerator problems we are called about most, with the parts a technician checks first and the codes that often appear with them.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge warm but freezer still cold | Evaporator fan not moving air into the fresh-food side, frost blocking the air duct from a defrost fault (dE), damper or temperature sensor problem. | GE refrigerator dE guide |
| Fridge and freezer both warm | Demo mode (DE) turned on, controls set off, condenser fan, start relay or compressor problem, or a room outside GE’s 60–110°F range. | Refrigerator not cooling guide |
| dE, FF or CC code flashing | Defrost system not running (dE), frozen food warming (FF) or temperature out of range (CC). A code that returns after unplugging needs diagnosis. | GE refrigerator dE guide |
| Frost or ice on the freezer back wall | Defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control fault, or a torn door gasket letting humid air in. | Refrigerator repair |
| Water leaking inside or under the fridge | Frozen or clogged defrost drain, cracked water line, loose filter housing or failed water inlet valve. | Refrigerator repair |
| Ice maker or dispenser not working | Ice maker switched off, water filter overdue, closed supply valve, jammed cube, failed ice maker, or dispenser lock on. | GE ice maker repair |
| Not running at all | Outlet or breaker, controls turned off, or a normal 30–45 minute defrost pause. If it stays off, the compressor relay or control needs testing. | Refrigerator repair |
| Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling | Fan blade hitting ice, worn fan motor, start relay clicking, loose drain pan or ice maker running without water. | Refrigerator repair |

Repair or replace
Is Your GE Refrigerator Worth Repairing?
Most GE refrigerator repairs are single parts, such as a fan motor, defrost heater, sensor, inlet valve or control board, and those cost far less than a new refrigerator. Café and Monogram models cost much more to replace, which usually makes repair the better choice. A compressor or sealed-system failure on an older standard model is the one worth weighing. You get the cost first, and when the repair approaches half the price of a comparable new refrigerator, we will say so.
Usually worth repairing
- The refrigerator is under about 10 years old
- The problem is a fan, defrost part, sensor, valve or board
- It is a Café, Profile or Monogram model that costs more to replace
- The cabinet, liner and doors are in good shape
Worth weighing carefully
- The refrigerator is more than 12 to 15 years old
- The compressor or sealed system has failed on an older unit
- The liner is cracked or the cabinet is rusting
- Repair cost is more than half the price of a new refrigerator

Food at risk
GE Refrigerator Stopped Cooling?
A refrigerator that stops cooling puts food at risk within hours. Keep the doors closed, check for an FF code or demo mode, and call us. GE says to keep the refrigerator plugged in until the technician arrives. If it has been above 40°F for more than 4 hours, food safety guidance says to throw out perishable food. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

GE Refrigerator Repair Questions
The freezer makes the cold air and a fan sends it to the fresh-food side. When the freezer stays cold but the fridge warms up, the evaporator fan, a damper, a sensor or frost from a defrost fault is usually blocking that airflow. GE’s checks start with the controls, door seals and blocked vents. See GE’s not cooling checks (opens in a new tab).
GE says a lowercase dE means the defrost system hasn’t operated properly in the last 24 hours. A capital DE is different: it means demo mode is on and cooling is disabled. Our GE refrigerator dE guide explains both.
GE says FF means frozen food may be thawing because the temperature is too high, and CC means the temperature is incorrect. Check the controls and keep the doors closed. If the code persists after unplugging the refrigerator for a minute or two, book a repair.
tC isn’t an error. GE says it means TurboCool is on, which holds the fresh-food section at its coldest setting for up to 8 hours. tF means TurboFreeze is on. Both turn off on their own.
GE says unplugging the refrigerator for a minute or two may reset the control and clear a flashing code. If the code comes back, the part behind it needs repair. Keep the refrigerator plugged in afterward so it can recover.
GE says a defrost pause of 30 to 45 minutes once or twice a day is normal. If it stays off longer, check the outlet, breaker and controls, then book a repair.
GE lists a room temperature range of 60°F to 110°F for its refrigerators. A DFW garage can go past 110°F in summer, which makes the refrigerator run constantly and struggle to hold temperature. Give it the clearance GE recommends and call us if it can’t keep up.
Inside the fresh-food section: on a side wall, near the ceiling, on the floor or behind the crispers, depending on the style. See GE’s model number guide (opens in a new tab).
Yes. GE Appliances, a Haier company, makes GE, GE Profile, Café, Monogram, Haier and Hotpoint, and we repair refrigerators from all of them. Tell us the brand and model when you book.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not a GE authorized service provider. GE says its warranty period is typically one year (see your Owner's Manual), and GE's own service brand, Bodewell, handles warranty repairs, so contact GE first if your refrigerator is still covered (GE warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair GE refrigerators that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
Repairs carry a 90-day warranty, or 6 months for ALAS members. Sealed-system repairs, such as compressor and refrigerant work, carry 12 months for every customer. The exact coverage is written on your invoice.
We repair GE refrigerators across Dallas–Fort Worth, including Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Dallas, Richardson, Coppell, Southlake, Keller and Grapevine. Enter your ZIP code in the service area section to check coverage.
