GE Ice Maker and Dispenser Repair
ALAS repairs ice makers and ice and water dispensers in GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram refrigerators across Dallas–Fort Worth. GE says its ice makers need the freezer near 0°F and the ice maker itself to reach 16°F before they make ice, and many ice problems come from water: a filter more than 6 months old, a closed supply valve, a kinked line or a failed water inlet valve. Others come from the ice maker itself, which GE says shows a flashing green light when it detects a fault, or from the dispenser motor and switches. Your technician checks the freezer temperature, supply, filter, valve, fill tube, ice maker and dispenser in order and names the part that actually failed. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
GE puts the refrigerator’s model label inside the fresh-food section: on a side wall, near the ceiling or behind the crispers. Having the model number ready helps us bring the right ice maker or valve.
Common ice maker problems
Common GE Ice Maker Problems and What Causes Them
These are the GE ice maker problems we see most, with the parts a technician checks first.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Not making ice at all | Ice maker switched off (new ones ship off), freezer warmer than 0°F, closed supply valve, overdue filter, failed water inlet valve or ice maker. | Ice maker repair |
| Green light flashing on the ice maker | GE says the ice maker is in a fault state: a harvest taking over 30 minutes, a jammed cube or rake, a heater not warming the mold or a motor not running. | Ice maker repair |
| Small cubes or slow ice | Old water filter, low water pressure, partly frozen fill tube or a freezer running warm. A nearly empty freezer also slows ice. | GE refrigerator repair |
| CI code on the display | GE says CI means the ice maker may not be operating properly. Check that it is on and not jammed, then book a diagnosis if CI returns. | GE refrigerator codes |
| Ice dispenser not working | Dispenser lock on, ice clumped in the bucket, jammed auger, failed dispenser motor, switch or door wiring. | Ice maker repair |
| Water dispenser slow or not working | Filter overdue or not seated, closed shutoff valve, frozen door line or failed inlet valve. | Ice maker repair |
| Ice buildup or frozen bucket | Warm air leaking past the door seal or ice chute flap, a fan problem or water overfilling the mold. | GE refrigerator repair |
| Water leaking from the ice maker | Inlet valve not closing, cracked fill tube, ice maker not level or a split line behind the refrigerator. | Ice maker repair |

Repair or replace
Is Your GE Ice Maker Worth Repairing?
Almost always. An ice maker, inlet valve, dispenser motor or water line is a single-part repair that costs a fraction of a new refrigerator, and many ice problems turn out to be a filter, valve or freezer setting. GE notes that an ice maker still flashing after its diagnostic often needs replacing, which is a straightforward repair. The bigger question is the refrigerator itself: if it also has cooling problems or is near the end of its life, we will tell you first.
Usually worth repairing
- The refrigerator itself is cooling normally
- The problem is the ice maker, valve, filter or water line
- It is a Café or Profile model you want to keep
- The refrigerator is under about 12 years old
Worth weighing carefully
- The refrigerator also has cooling or compressor problems
- The refrigerator is more than 12 to 15 years old
- Several dispenser and control parts have failed at once
- You rarely use the ice maker and could switch it off

GE Ice Maker Repair Questions
GE says to check the temperatures first: about 37°F in the fresh-food section and 0°F in the freezer, because the ice maker has to reach 16°F. Make sure the ice maker is switched on, the water filter is less than 6 months old and no cubes are jammed in the mold. If there is still no ice, book a diagnosis. See GE’s ice maker checks (opens in a new tab).
GE says a flashing green light means the ice maker is in a fault state, for example a jammed cube, a harvest taking more than 30 minutes, or the heater or motor not working. GE describes a diagnostic test for models with an on/off switch and LED; if the light keeps flashing afterward, GE says the ice maker often needs replacing. See GE’s green light test (opens in a new tab).
On models with an on/off switch and LED, GE’s test is to switch it off for 15 seconds, switch it on and press the paddle 3 times within 15 seconds. Within about 3 minutes the ice maker should cycle and the light should go solid. Clear any jammed cubes first, and be careful: the mold can be hot.
Probably not. GE says ice makers usually ship switched off, the first fills are small while air purges from the line, and it can take up to 24 hours to get cold enough to make ice.
GE says most dispensers have a child lock-out, so check that first. Unplugging the refrigerator or switching off the breaker for 30 seconds can reset the control, and on some models a new water filter reactivates it. If ice is clumped in the bucket, break it up. If the dispenser still won’t work, the motor or switch needs repair.
Yes, in most cases. An ice maker, inlet valve or dispenser part costs far less than a new refrigerator. If the refrigerator also has cooling problems or is very old, your technician will tell you before you approve the repair.
Yes. We repair ice makers and dispensers in GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram refrigerators. Tell us the model number when you book.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not a GE authorized service provider. GE says its warranty period is typically one year (see your Owner's Manual), and GE's own service brand, Bodewell, handles warranty repairs, so contact GE first if your refrigerator is still covered (GE warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair GE refrigerators that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
