Whirlpool Washer Repair for Top-Load and Front-Load Models
ALAS repairs Whirlpool washers in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth, including high-efficiency top-load washers such as Cabrio models, agitator top-loads, front-load washers such as Duet models, and the washer half of stacked laundry centers. Whirlpool washers report most problems as a code: F5E2 for the lid or door lock, F9E1 or F21 when draining takes too long, and LF or F8E1 when the washer can’t fill. Many of those turn out to be installation or hose problems, such as a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, which is why your technician checks the hoses, drain pump, lid or door lock, shifter, motor and controls on your model before naming the failed part. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
Whirlpool top-load washer model numbers start with WTW and front-load models with WFW. On a top-load washer, Whirlpool puts the model label beneath the lid on the tub rim; on a front-load washer it is inside the door on the rim of the opening. A photo of the label and any code on the display helps us bring the right parts.

These are the Whirlpool washer problems we are called about most, with the parts a technician checks first and the codes that often appear with them.

Repair or replace
Is Your Whirlpool Washer Worth Repairing?
Many Whirlpool washer calls are drain, lid lock, inlet valve or hose problems, and those are among the simplest repairs. A drain pump, lid lock or inlet valve is a single part. A failed tub bearing or a control board plus motor on an older washer is where replacement is worth weighing. You get the cost first, and when the repair approaches half the price of a new washer, we will say so.
Usually worth repairing
- The washer is under about 10 years old
- The problem is a pump, lock, valve, hose or shifter
- The tub and cabinet are free of rust and damage
- It is a front-load or stacked unit that costs more to replace
Worth weighing carefully
- The washer is more than 10 to 12 years old
- The tub bearing has failed and the tub is noisy or loose
- The control board and motor have both failed
- Repair cost is more than half the price of a new washer

Whirlpool Washer Repair Questions
Whirlpool’s checks start with the drain hose: it shouldn’t be kinked, clogged or pushed too far into the standpipe, and it shouldn’t be taped to the pipe. Too much detergent can also stop draining. On front-load models with a drain pump filter, clean the filter. If water still won’t drain, the drain pump usually needs repair. Our F9E1 guide covers the steps.
The washer only spins when it detects a closed, latched lid or door, so check for clothing in the latch first. Unbalanced or very large loads, delicate cycles that spin slowly and excess suds from non-HE detergent also stop spinning. If an empty washer still won’t spin, the lid lock, drain pump, shifter or motor needs a technician. See Whirlpool’s not draining or spinning guide (opens in a new tab).
On a top-load washer, Whirlpool says F5E2 means the washer can’t engage the lid lock, usually because something is blocking the lid-lock area. On front-load washers, F5E2 and F5E3 mean the door isn’t locking properly. Our F5E2 and F5E3 guide has the safe checks.
F9E1 is a long drain code: the washer took longer than expected to drain. Whirlpool points first to the drain hose position, kinks and clogs, and on front loads to the drain pump filter and door-seal drain holes. See our F9E1 guide.
Both mean the washer is taking too long to fill or isn’t sensing enough water. Whirlpool says both hot and cold faucets must be fully open, both hoses connected without kinks, and the inlet screens clean. Our F8E1 and LF guide covers the rest.
Whirlpool’s reset for most F codes is to unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in, select the cycle and press Start. On front-load washers you can also press Pause/Cancel twice and then Power. A reset clears a control glitch, but if the code returns, the part behind it needs repair.
Yes. We repair Whirlpool Cabrio and other high-efficiency top-load washers, agitator top-loads, Duet and other front-load washers, and stacked washer-dryer units. Tell us the model number when you book so we bring the right parts.
It can. If your home has hard water, minerals can build up on the inlet screens and inside the hoses and slow filling over time. Whirlpool’s fill-code steps include cleaning the inlet screens without removing them, and running your washer’s cleaning cycle regularly helps keep residue down. Your city’s annual water quality report shows how hard your water is.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not a Whirlpool authorized service provider. Whirlpool says its limited warranty typically lasts a year from delivery, so contact Whirlpool first if your washer is still covered (warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair Whirlpool washers that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
Yes. Maytag, Amana and KitchenAid are Whirlpool Corporation brands, and many of their washers share designs and troubleshooting with Whirlpool. Always confirm a code in your own model’s Use & Care Guide, and tell us the brand and model when you book.
Write down the code and the model number, and remove the laundry if you can. If the washer is full of water, unplug it and turn off both faucets. Don’t force a locked lid or door open.
