(469) 638-3215Seeing F5E2 or F5E3 on your Whirlpool washer? Here is what Whirlpool says the codes mean on top-load and front-load models, the checks you can safely do yourself, and when to call a technician.
On a Whirlpool top-load washer, F5E2 means the washer can’t engage the lid lock, and Whirlpool says something is likely blocking the lid-lock area. On a front-load washer, F5E2 and F5E3 mean the door isn’t locking properly. The washer won’t fill or spin until the lock engages. Source: Whirlpool F5E2 support page (opens in a new tab).

These are the causes Whirlpool lists first and the parts a technician checks.
Try these steps in order. Unplug the washer before reaching into the lock area. Codes vary by model, so confirm yours in your Use & Care Guide.
Remove anything near the lid lock or door latch, including clothing caught in the opening and items on top of the washer.
Wipe detergent or softener residue from the lock and latch with a damp cloth, then close the lid or door firmly.
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker for 5 minutes, restore power, select the cycle and press Start.

ALAS technicians diagnose Whirlpool lid and door lock codes, explain the cause and give you a written estimate before any repair.

Whirlpool says F5E2 means the washer can’t engage the lid lock, usually because something is blocking the lid-lock area. Check the area, make sure no clothing is in the way and reset the washer by unplugging it for 5 minutes.
On front-load models, Whirlpool says F5E3 means the door isn’t locking properly. Close the door fully, check the latch for clothing or shipping material and unplug the washer for 5 minutes.
No. Whirlpool says codes depend on the model: F5E2 is the lid lock on top-load washers and the door lock on front-load washers. Check your Use & Care Guide for your model.
We recommend a technician. The lid lock is wired to the control, and a lock that keeps failing can point to a bent strike or a wiring fault that needs attention at the same time.
