Whirlpool Over-the-Range and Built-In Microwave Repair

ALAS repairs Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves, including models with a hidden vent, and built-in microwaves in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth. Over-the-range models are worth repairing more often than countertop units because they are also your range hood, with a vent fan and cooktop light, and they take time and care to remove and reinstall. Whirlpool microwaves show codes such as F1E1 for the relay control board, F2 or SE for the keypad and F4E1 for the cavity thermistor, and some no-heat calls turn out to be Control Lock or demo mode. A microwave stores high voltage even when unplugged, so your technician handles the magnetron, high-voltage diode and capacitor, door switches and controls safely. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Repair or replace

Is Your Whirlpool Microwave Worth Repairing?

Over-the-range and built-in Whirlpool microwaves are often worth repairing, because replacing one means matching the mounting, vent and cabinet opening. A door switch, keypad, fuse or turntable motor is a modest repair. A magnetron or control board on an older unit is the one to weigh against replacement. You get the cost first, and when replacement makes more sense, we will say so.

Usually worth repairing

  • It is an over-the-range or built-in model
  • The problem is a door switch, fuse, keypad or fan
  • The microwave is under about 8 to 10 years old
  • The cavity paint and door are in good condition

Worth weighing carefully

  • It is a basic countertop model
  • The microwave is more than 10 years old
  • The magnetron and control board have both failed
  • The cavity is rusted or the door is damaged

Safety first

Whirlpool Microwave Sparking or Smoking?

Stop using a microwave that sparks, smokes, smells like burning or runs with the door open. Keep the door closed if there is smoke or fire inside, unplug it or switch off its breaker, and call us. Don’t open the cabinet: microwaves store high voltage even when unplugged. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

Whirlpool Microwave Repair Questions

Whirlpool suggests ruling out Control Lock and demo mode first, making sure you press Start after entering the time, and, on a new microwave, removing the shipping spacer from the door. Then heat 1 cup of water on HI for 1 minute: if it doesn’t warm up, the magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or a door switch has usually failed. See Whirlpool’s not heating checks (opens in a new tab).

Whirlpool says the message appears when the door has been closed for 5 minutes or more without the microwave being started, as a safety feature. Open and close the door, then start it. If it doesn’t clear, check for packing material or a rack blocking the door lock. If it still won’t clear, the door switch or latch needs repair. See Whirlpool’s Door message page (opens in a new tab).

On Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves, both point to the keypad (user interface) or its wiring. Switch off the breaker for 1 minute, restore power and test it. If the code returns, the keypad or control board needs repair.

PF or a flashing colon means there was a power failure or the clock was turned off. Press Cancel and set the clock. Whirlpool says to contact a qualified electrician if it keeps flashing, since that points to the home’s power supply.

We don’t recommend it. A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after it is unplugged, and the door switches are safety parts that keep it from running with the door open. Simple checks such as Control Lock, demo mode and the breaker are fine; leave the cabinet closed.

Often, yes. An over-the-range microwave is also your range hood and has to match the cabinet opening and mounting, so a door switch, keypad, fan or fuse repair usually costs less than buying and installing a new one. A basic countertop model is usually cheaper to replace.

ALAS is an independent repair company, not a Whirlpool authorized service provider, so warranty claims go through Whirlpool (warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair Whirlpool microwaves that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
