Whirlpool Dryer Repair for Electric and Gas Models
ALAS repairs Whirlpool dryers in homes across Dallas–Fort Worth, including electric and gas front-load and top-load style dryers, Cabrio and Duet pairs, and the dryer half of stacked laundry centers. Whirlpool dryers with moisture sensors and a Check Vent light watch the airflow, so a dryer that runs long or shows AF or F4E3 is often a vent problem rather than a failed heater. Electric Whirlpool dryers also need both legs of a 240V circuit, and Whirlpool notes that one tripped breaker can leave the drum turning with no heat. Your technician tests the venting, heating element or gas burner, thermal fuse, thermistors, moisture sensor, belt, rollers and controls before naming the failed part. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
Whirlpool electric dryer model numbers start with WED and gas models with WGD. Whirlpool puts the model label inside the dryer door on the rim of the opening. Telling us whether your dryer is electric or gas, and sending a photo of the label, helps us bring the right parts.
Common dryer problems
Common Whirlpool Dryer Problems and What Causes Them
These are the Whirlpool dryer problems we are called about most, with the parts a technician checks first and the codes that often appear with them.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Electric dryer not heating | One of the two breakers tripped, failed heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat, cord wired wrong at the terminal block. L2 means low or no line voltage. | Dryer repair |
| Gas dryer not heating | Gas shutoff valve not fully open, failed igniter, gas valve coils, flame sensor or thermal fuse. | Dryer repair |
| Taking too long or needing two cycles | Lint-clogged or crushed vent, foil or plastic duct, a long vent run with many elbows, overloaded drum, EcoBoost adding time, weak heat. | Whirlpool AF / F4E3 guide |
| AF, Check Vent or F4E3 | Restricted airflow: a clogged lint screen or vent, a crushed or kinked vent, too many turns, or an outside hood that won’t open. | Whirlpool AF / F4E3 guide |
| F3E1, F3E2 or F3E3 sensor codes | Exhaust or inlet thermistor fault, wiring, or loads too small to touch the moisture sensors. A code that returns after a reset needs diagnosis. | Whirlpool F3E1 guide |
| Drum not turning | Broken drive belt, worn idler pulley or rollers, failed drive motor, door switch or an overloaded drum. | Dryer repair |
| Squealing, thumping or scraping | Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, belt or drum glides, or coins and zippers caught in the drum. | Dryer repair |
| Won’t start | Door not fully closed, tripped breaker, failed door switch, thermal fuse, start switch or control board. PF means power was interrupted. | Whirlpool appliance repair |

Repair or replace
Is Your Whirlpool Dryer Worth Repairing?
Most Whirlpool dryer repairs are single parts: a heating element, thermal fuse, igniter, belt, roller or sensor. Many long-drying calls turn out to be a clogged vent, which needs cleaning rather than parts. A dryer is worth weighing against replacement when the drum or bearing is badly worn or several major parts have failed on an older unit. When repair costs approach half the price of a new dryer, we will say so.
Usually worth repairing
- The dryer is under about 10 to 12 years old
- The problem is a heater, fuse, igniter, belt, roller or sensor
- It is a stacked unit or one half of a matched pair you want to keep
- The drum and cabinet are free of rust and damage
Worth weighing carefully
- The dryer is more than 12 years old
- The drum, bearing or cabinet is badly worn or damaged
- The motor and control board have both failed
- Repair cost is more than half the price of a new dryer

Whirlpool Dryer Overheating, Burning Smell or Gas Smell?
A dryer that is too hot to touch, smells like burning or trips the breaker should not be used until it has been checked, and lint in the dryer or vent is a common cause of dryer fires. If you smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the home right away without using light switches or phones inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Otherwise, take these steps and call us. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

Whirlpool Dryer Repair Questions
Whirlpool suggests running an empty heated Timed Dry cycle for 5 minutes and feeling inside, and making sure Air Only or Air Fluff isn’t selected. On electric dryers, check both breakers, because one runs the motor and the other the heater. On gas dryers, the shutoff valve is open when the handle is parallel to the gas pipe. If there is still no heat, the element, thermal fuse, igniter or gas valve needs repair. See Whirlpool’s not heating checks (opens in a new tab).
Restricted airflow is the most common cause. Whirlpool recommends rigid or semi-rigid metal vent, notes that many dryers perform best under 35 feet of equivalent vent length, and says to clean the vent every 1 to 2 years. Overloading and the EcoBoost option also lengthen drying. If the vent is clear and loads still take two cycles, the heater or burner may be weak.
Whirlpool says AF and the Check Vent light mean restricted airflow: the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running, but drying takes longer. Our AF and F4E3 guide covers the checks.
Whirlpool lists F3E1 under the exhaust thermistor, the sensor that reads the exhaust temperature. Whirlpool’s fix is to switch off the breakers for 1 minute, restore power and run a Timed Dry cycle. If the code returns, the thermistor or its wiring needs testing. See our F3E1 guide.
Whirlpool says L2 means low or no line voltage, which can keep the heater from turning on. Check both breakers or fuses and confirm the cord is installed correctly. If L2 stays on, Whirlpool recommends a qualified electrician for the home’s power supply.
Switch off the dryer’s breakers for 1 minute (Whirlpool says 5 minutes for some codes), turn them back on, start a Timed Dry cycle and watch it for a minute. A reset clears a control glitch, but it won’t fix a failed heater, belt or sensor.
Yes. ALAS cleans dryer vents as well as repairing dryers, which helps when AF, Check Vent or F4E3 codes and long drying times come from a clogged duct. Whirlpool itself says to have the entire home vent run cleaned when the Check Vent warning keeps returning.
Usually, yes. Elements, thermal fuses, igniters, belts and rollers are single-part repairs that cost far less than a new dryer. A worn drum or bearing, or several major failures on an older dryer, is when replacement may make more sense.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not a Whirlpool authorized service provider, so warranty claims go through Whirlpool (warranty information (opens in a new tab)). We repair Whirlpool dryers that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
Stop using the dryer if it smells hot or burning. Otherwise, clean the lint screen, check that the vent behind the dryer isn’t crushed, and note any code and the model number. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
