Whirlpool Ice Maker and Dispenser Repair

ALAS repairs ice makers and ice and water dispensers in Whirlpool French door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators across Dallas–Fort Worth. Most ice problems start with water: a filter that isn’t fully locked in, a kinked supply line behind the refrigerator, a failed water inlet valve or a frozen fill tube. Others come from the ice maker module, its fan or the dispenser motor and switch. Whirlpool notes that a new ice maker takes time to cycle after a reset, so your technician checks the supply, filter, valve, fill tube, freezer temperature and ice maker in order and names the part that actually failed. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Repair or replace

Is Your Whirlpool Ice Maker Worth Repairing?

Almost always. An ice maker, inlet valve, dispenser motor or water line is a single-part repair that costs a fraction of a new refrigerator, and many ice problems turn out to be a filter or supply line. The bigger question is the refrigerator itself: if it also has cooling problems or is near the end of its life, we will tell you before you spend money on the ice maker.

Usually worth repairing

  • The refrigerator itself is cooling normally
  • The problem is the ice maker, valve, filter or water line
  • It is a French door or in-door ice model you want to keep
  • The refrigerator is under about 12 years old

Worth weighing carefully

  • The refrigerator also has cooling or compressor problems
  • The refrigerator is more than 12 to 15 years old
  • Several dispenser and control parts have failed at once
  • You rarely use the ice maker and could switch it off

Whirlpool Ice Maker Repair Questions

Start with the checks Whirlpool lists: make sure the ice maker is switched on, the water filter is locked and sealed, and the supply line behind the refrigerator isn’t kinked or pinched. Then unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute and wait a couple of hours. If there is still no ice, the inlet valve, fill tube or ice maker usually needs repair. See Whirlpool’s not making ice steps (opens in a new tab).

Many Whirlpool ice makers have an on/off switch or a reset button you hold for a few seconds. Whirlpool also suggests unplugging the refrigerator for 1 minute and then waiting a couple of hours for the ice maker to cycle. Check your Use & Care Guide for your model’s button location.

Yes. Whirlpool says a newly installed filter must be fully locked and sealed. To test it, remove the filter and try the water dispenser: if water flows without the filter, the filter wasn’t installed correctly. Whirlpool recommends replacing the filter about every 6 months.

Whirlpool warns that an ice maker left on without a water connection can buzz. Switch the ice maker off if the refrigerator isn’t connected to water. If it is connected and still buzzes, the water inlet valve may be failing.

When the bucket is full but nothing comes out, ice has often clumped together or jammed the auger. Empty the bucket and break up the clumps. If the dispenser motor hums or does nothing with a clear bucket, the motor, switch or door actuator needs repair.

After installation or a reset, give it time: Whirlpool suggests waiting a couple of hours after a reset, and a new installation usually needs about a day to fill the bucket. If there is still nothing after 24 hours, book a diagnosis.

Yes, in most cases. An ice maker module, inlet valve or dispenser part costs far less than a new refrigerator. If the refrigerator also has cooling problems or is very old, your technician will tell you before you approve the repair.

ALAS is an independent repair company, not a Whirlpool authorized service provider, so warranty claims go through Whirlpool. We repair Whirlpool ice makers that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
