LG Microwave Repair for Over-the-Range and Countertop Models
Most LG microwaves we see in Dallas–Fort Worth homes hang over the range and also serve as the cooktop vent, often with ExtendaVent and an EasyClean interior; we also repair LG countertop and built-in models. Typical calls: the timer counts down but food comes out cold, pressing Start does nothing, the touch panel goes unresponsive, sparks appear inside, the tray or light quits, or the vent fan turns weak or noisy. Some things that look like faults are normal on LG models, such as the Auto Cool fan running after cooking. A microwave holds a high-voltage charge inside even after it is unplugged, which is why internal testing is a technician’s job. We trace the problem through the door latch, high-voltage parts, control board and motors, then give you a written price, and no work starts until you approve it.
The model label on an LG microwave is usually on the frame inside the door or on the back or side of the cabinet. Having the model number ready when you book helps us bring the right parts.
Common microwave problems
Common LG Microwave Problems and What Causes Them
These are the LG microwave problems we are called about most, with the parts a technician checks first.
| Symptom | Common causes a technician checks | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but doesn’t heat | Door not latching fully, failed door switch, high-voltage diode, capacitor, transformer, magnetron or control board. | Microwave repair |
| Won’t start or won’t turn on | Control lock on, door not latching, loose power cord or tripped breaker, blown internal fuse, door switch, control board. | Microwave repair |
| Buttons or touch panel not responding | Control lock left on, steam or grease film on the keypad, a worn keypad membrane or ribbon cable, or the control board itself. | Microwave repair |
| Sparking or arcing inside | Metal or decorated cookware, metal rack not seated on its brackets, food buildup, damaged waveguide cover or cavity coating, failing magnetron. | Microwave repair |
| Turntable not turning or rattling | Debris on the roller ring or shaft, tray not seated, worn turntable coupler, failed turntable motor. | Microwave repair |
| Vent fan weak, noisy or not working | Grease filters packed with residue, a vent fan motor or speed switch wearing out, a damper flap stuck shut, or ductwork that was installed to the wrong vent setting. | Vent hood repair |
| Cooktop or interior light not working | A dead LED or bulb, a heat-damaged socket, the light switch on the keypad or the control board output. | Microwave repair |
| Beeping, loud humming or display going dark | Reminder tones after cooking, a sticking key, the 5-minute display sleep LG describes, or a loud buzz during heating that points to the magnetron or high-voltage diode. | Microwave repair |

Is Your LG Microwave Worth Repairing?
An LG over-the-range microwave is also your cooktop vent, and models with ExtendaVent 2.0 extend that vent over more of the cooktop. Swapping one means finding a unit that fits the same wall plate, cabinet opening and duct, so fixing a switch, fan or control is often the simpler path. Countertop LG models are a different story and are usually cheaper to replace. Your technician will tell you plainly which side yours falls on.
Usually worth repairing
- It is an over-the-range or built-in model
- The problem is a door switch, fuse, control panel or fan
- The microwave is under about 8 to 10 years old
- The cavity and door are free of rust and damage
Worth weighing carefully
- It is a countertop model
- The door is warped, cracked or doesn’t seal
- The cavity is rusted or burned through
- Repair cost is more than half the price of a new microwave

LG Microwave Repair Questions
Start with a simple test: heat a cup of water. LG says if the water heats well, the microwave is likely working normally, and slow results usually come from frozen food, opening the door during cooking or a tray that isn’t turning. If the water stays cold, a door switch, diode, capacitor or magnetron has likely failed and needs a technician. See LG’s not-heating checks (opens in a new tab).
LG lists three common causes: the control lock is on, the door isn’t latching, or the control panel needs a reset. Wipe around the door and open and close it two or three times so the latch engages. If buttons make no sound, the lock may be on. LG’s start button troubleshooting (opens in a new tab) walks through each check.
On many LG microwaves, LG says to press and hold the Clear/Off button for 3 seconds to lock or unlock the controls. The method can vary by model, so check your owner’s manual if that doesn’t work. If the buttons still don’t respond with the lock off, the touch panel or control board may need repair.
LG recommends unplugging the microwave or switching off its circuit breaker for 2 to 3 minutes, then restoring power. This resets the control panel and clears communication glitches. A reset won’t fix a failed part, so if the problem returns, book a repair.
Many LG microwaves turn the display off after five minutes without use to save energy. LG says pressing any button or opening and closing the door wakes it. Also make sure the power cord is firmly plugged in. If the display stays dark after that, check the breaker; a fuse or control board may have failed.
LG microwaves with Auto Cool run a cooling fan for a while after cooking ends and show “Cool” on the display. LG says this can’t be stopped and is normal. If the vent fan runs constantly, won’t turn off or makes a grinding noise, the fan switch, motor or control board should be checked.
No. Stop it and unplug it. LG lists running the microwave empty, metal or gold- and silver-trimmed cookware, a metal rack not seated on all four brackets, food buildup and a damaged cavity as causes. If sparking continues with the cavity clean and nothing metal inside, LG says the microwave needs repair service before it is used again.
Take out the glass tray and roller ring, clean off any food or debris on the ring and the turntable shaft, and reseat both parts so they sit level. Cookware larger than the tray can also stop it. If the tray still won’t turn, the coupler or turntable motor has likely failed.
You can reseat the door, toggle the control lock, do LG’s 2 to 3 minute power reset, clean the turntable ring and wipe the EasyClean interior, which LG says needs no chemicals or scrubbing. Stop there. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so anything behind the outer cabinet is a job for a technician.
Usually, yes. An LG over-the-range model doubles as your cooktop vent, so replacing it means matching the wall plate, cabinet opening and duct. Door switches, fuses, touch panels and vent fan motors are common repairs that keep the original installation in place. If the cavity is rusted or the door won’t seal, your written estimate will show whether replacement makes more sense.
ALAS is an independent repair company, not an LG authorized service provider, so LG warranty claims go through LG directly. We repair LG microwaves that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
