LG Ice Maker Repair for French Door, Side-by-Side and Craft Ice Refrigerators

ALAS repairs ice makers in LG refrigerators across Dallas–Fort Worth. On many LG French door and InstaView models the ice maker sits in a separate compartment in the refrigerator door, kept cold by air from the freezer, which is why frost and ice buildup in that compartment is a common LG complaint. Models with Craft Ice make round ice and need the bin seated correctly. LG says the freezer must stay below 19°F for ice production and recommends -4°F or lower, and that household water pressure should be between 20 and 120 psi. LG displays also report ice maker faults such as IF for the ice maker fan and It for an ice maker defect. Our technician checks those settings first, then the ice maker, its fan and seals, the inlet valve, fill tube and dispenser. You get the diagnosis and a written price first, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Repair or replace

Is Your LG Ice Maker Worth Repairing?

On an LG refrigerator the ice maker is usually a separate, replaceable assembly, so a failed ice maker, fan, inlet valve or compartment seal rarely means replacing the whole refrigerator. The bigger question on LG French door models is why the door compartment iced up. Replacing the ice maker without fixing the air leak or fan behind the buildup often brings the problem back, so we repair both at the same visit when we find them.

Usually worth repairing

  • The refrigerator itself cools normally
  • The problem is the ice maker, fan, inlet valve, fill tube or seals
  • It is a French door, InstaView or side-by-side model that costs more to replace
  • The refrigerator is under about 12 years old

Worth weighing carefully

  • The refrigerator is also not cooling properly
  • Ice keeps building up after several repairs
  • The refrigerator is more than 12 years old
  • Repair cost is more than half the price of a new refrigerator

Urgent repair

LG Ice Maker Leaking Water?

Water dripping from the freezer door, pooling under the refrigerator or freezing on the floor usually means the ice maker is overfilling or the fill line has cracked. Shut the water off first so the leak can’t spread under cabinets, then call us. After-hours emergency service is available for an added fee.

LG Ice Maker Repair Questions

First make sure the ice maker is on, using the switch on the left side of the ice maker or Ice On/Ice Off on the control panel. LG says the freezer must stay below 19°F and recommends -4°F or lower, and the water supply valve should be fully open. After changing a setting, allow 24 hours. If there is still no ice, book a repair.

LG’s no-ice troubleshooting guide (opens in a new tab) says to remove the ice bin, gently shake the ice maker a few times, replace the bin, then turn the refrigerator off for 30 seconds by unplugging it or tripping the breaker. If it still isn’t making or harvesting ice after 4 to 6 hours, the ice maker needs repair service.

On many LG ice makers the test button is underneath, below the ice tray. Press and hold it for about three seconds until the ice maker starts to turn. Models without a tray have a small test hole that needs a paper clip. LG notes the test can run only once in the first two hours after the refrigerator is plugged in. No movement usually means service is needed.

It is usually warm, humid air getting into the door ice compartment past a worn seal, a torn gasket or a door that isn’t fully closed. Check that the door shuts firmly and the gasket has no tears, and don’t chip the ice off. If the ice returns or the fan stops, book a repair. LG’s refrigerator error code list (opens in a new tab) names ice around the ice maker fan as a cause of the IF code.

Small or hollow cubes usually mean the ice maker isn’t getting enough water. LG says household water pressure should be between 20 and 120 psi. A filter older than about six months, air trapped in the line after a filter change, a kinked supply line or a weak water inlet valve can all reduce flow. A technician can measure pressure and test the valve.

LG recommends replacing the water filter about every 6 months. After installing a new one, dispense about 2.5 gallons of water to clear trapped air and fine particles, then reset the filter indicator by holding the Water Filter or Filter Reset button for 3 seconds. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons for slow ice production.

Check that the control lock is off by holding Lock for 3 seconds, and that the display doesn’t show Sb for Sabbath mode, which disables the dispenser. LG says it ends after 96 hours, or hold Freezer and Wi-Fi for 3 seconds. Then break up clumped ice in the bin and check the door chute for frost. LG’s ice not dispensing guide (opens in a new tab) walks through each step. If ice still won’t come out, book a repair.

LG says an overfilling ice tray is usually caused by water pressure that is too high or too low. Leaks can also come from an inlet valve that doesn’t close fully, a cracked fill tube or water line, or a leaking filter housing. Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator and switch the ice maker off, then book a repair.

LG notes that on Craft Ice models the ice bin has to be installed in the correct position to collect the round ice. LG also recommends a freezer temperature of 0°F or below for Craft Ice and says warm air entering the ice maker or high water pressure can cause overfilling. If the bin and settings are right and there is still no ice, book a repair.

LG says a newly installed refrigerator can take up to two days to begin making ice, and two to three days for the ice bin to fill completely. If your refrigerator has been running longer than that with the ice maker on and the water supply open, the delay is worth having checked.

ALAS is an independent repair company, not an LG authorized service provider, so LG warranty claims go through LG directly. We repair LG refrigerators and ice makers that are out of warranty or that you choose to have repaired independently.
