Seeing AE on your LG dishwasher? Here is what LG says it means, the checks you can safely do yourself, and when to call a technician.
What Does LG Error Code AE Mean?
An AE code (E1 on some models) means water has leaked into the base of your LG dishwasher and lifted the leak-detection float switch. LG says to find and fix the cause before running the dishwasher again.

These are the causes LG lists and the parts a technician checks.
How to Fix LG Error Code AE
Try these steps in order. Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before reaching inside or removing panels.
Check the leveling
Place a level on the tub or pour about a gallon of water into the empty tub and see whether it collects to one side. Adjust the leveling legs behind the bottom kick plate if needed.
Clean the door gasket and spray arms
Clean food and grease off the door gasket and sealing area. Remove the spray arms and clear any blockages with a soft brush and warm soapy water.
Use the right detergent
Use one pod or fill the dispenser only to the marked line, and never use hand dishwashing liquid, which creates too many suds.
Dry the base pan
Turn off the breaker, remove the kick plate and soak up water in the base pan, or leave the plate off for 24 to 48 hours to let it dry. Restore power and run an empty cycle.
When to Call a Technician
Schedule a repair if:
- AE returns after the base pan is dry
- The door gasket is torn or damaged
- You see water dripping from hoses or the pump
- The dishwasher leaks onto the floor

LG Dishwasher AE FAQs
AE is a leak error. Water has collected in the base of the dishwasher and lifted the float switch, so the dishwasher stops to prevent flooding.
Yes. Extra pods or hand dishwashing liquid create excess suds that can spill into the base. Use one pod or fill only to the dispenser line.
Once the source is fixed, the base pan needs to dry. Soaking up the water clears it faster; otherwise it can take 24 to 48 hours to evaporate.
If AE returns after the base pan is dry and the leveling, gasket and detergent check out, a hose, pump seal or valve may be leaking.
