Plano Garbage Disposal Repair From a Local Team

Disposals work hard in busy Plano kitchens. Grease, fibrous scraps and bones cause most jams, and older disposals in homes from the 1980s and 1990s often reach the point where replacement makes more sense than repair.

A disposal that hums but won’t spin, leaks into the cabinet or backs up the sink brings the kitchen to a stop. ALAS Appliance Repair has been helping Plano families with garbage disposals since 2019. We repair and replace continuous-feed and batch-feed disposals, including sink-top air-switch models, from InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen, KitchenAid, GE, Kohler and other brands.

Every visit starts with a full diagnosis. We check power, the reset and wall or air switch, free jams safely, and inspect the flywheel, motor, sink flange, gaskets and the dishwasher and drain connections. If the disposal can be repaired, we fix it. If the housing is cracked or the motor is worn out, we recommend a properly sized replacement, install it, reconnect the drain and dishwasher, and test for leaks. You get our recommendation and estimate before any work begins, and the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair or replacement you choose.

We repair and replace garbage disposals in homes, rental properties and apartments in West Plano, East Plano, Legacy, Willow Bend, Downtown Plano, Park Forest, Windridge, Oak Point, Haggard Farm, Chapel Hill, Deerfield, Kings Ridge, Hunters Glen, Gleneagles and Los Rios.

Repair or replace

Repair or Replace Your Garbage Disposal?

Most garbage disposals last about 10 to 12 years. Jams, tripped resets, switches and flange leaks are usually quick fixes. A leak from the bottom of the unit or a motor that keeps seizing usually means it is time for a new disposal, which we can install.

Usually worth repairing

  • The disposal is jammed or tripped its reset
  • The wall switch or air switch has failed
  • The leak is at the sink flange or a connection
  • The unit is under about 8 years old

Worth weighing carefully

  • Water leaks from the bottom of the housing
  • The motor keeps seizing or overheating
  • The disposal is more than 10 years old
  • It has needed several repairs recently

If the disposal is jammed, tripping its reset button or has a loose connection, a repair usually makes sense. If the body is cracked or leaking from the housing, replacement is the right call, and we size the new unit to how your household uses it.

A humming disposal has power, but the flywheel is jammed, usually by a bone, fruit pit or utensil. Turn off the wall switch and breaker, then insert the hex key into the hole in the center of the bottom of the unit and work it back and forth until it turns freely. Press the reset button and try again. Never put your hand inside the disposal.

Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, then check the GFCI outlet under the sink and the breaker. If it still won’t start, the cause is usually a failed wall switch or air switch, loose wiring or a failed motor.

On most disposals, the reset button is a small red button on the bottom of the unit, under the sink. If it trips, let the motor cool for about 10 minutes before pressing it.

Where the leak starts tells you the cause. A leak at the top is usually the sink flange seal. A leak at the side is usually the dishwasher hose or discharge pipe connection. A leak from the bottom usually means the housing has cracked internally, and the disposal needs to be replaced.

Food trapped under the rubber splash guard and buildup inside the grinding chamber cause most odors. Clean under the splash guard, then grind a handful of ice cubes with cold water. A smell that comes back quickly can mean a clog further down the drain.

A new disposal has a plastic knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet. If it was not removed during installation, the dishwasher cannot drain. A kinked or clogged dishwasher drain hose can cause the same problem.

Overloading the disposal, grinding fibrous or starchy food, or a worn motor that overheats can trip the reset repeatedly. Feed food in gradually with plenty of cold water. If it still trips with light use, the motor is likely wearing out.

Avoid grease and cooking oil, bones, fruit pits, fibrous foods like celery, corn husks and artichokes, large amounts of potato peels, coffee grounds, pasta and rice, and anything that is not food. These cause most jams, clogs and dull grinding.

Yes. Many high-end kitchens use a sink-top air button instead of a wall switch. When it stops working, the cause is usually the air switch control box, a disconnected or cracked air tube, or the button itself, all of which we repair.

Call us for the disposal itself, including jams, resets, switches, air switches, motor problems, flange leaks and replacing the disposal. Call a plumber for clogs deeper in the drain line or when the pipes under the sink need to be replaced.

Jams, tripped resets, failed switches and flange leaks are worth repairing. A cracked housing leaking from the bottom, or a motor that keeps seizing on an older unit, usually means a new disposal is the better choice. We will tell you honestly which applies, and we can install the replacement on the same visit when we have the right unit.

Yes. When a disposal is cracked, leaking from the housing or worn out, we remove the old unit and install a new one sized to how you cook and what you want, whether that is the same size, a quieter model or more horsepower. We reconnect the sink drain and dishwasher and test everything for leaks. We also replace air-switch disposals and their countertop buttons.

It depends on how you use it. A 1/3 horsepower disposal suits light use, most households do well with 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower, and a 1 horsepower model suits large families and frequent cooking. Larger motors grind faster, jam less and usually run quieter. Our technician will help you choose the right size for your kitchen.

Most garbage disposals last about 10 to 12 years. Running plenty of cold water, avoiding grease and fibrous food, and grinding small amounts at a time help a disposal last.

The cost depends on the problem, or on the replacement unit you choose. We start with a diagnosis, then give you a clear estimate before any work begins. If you go ahead with the repair or replacement, the diagnostic fee is credited toward it. If you decide not to, you pay only the diagnostic fee.

Repairs carry a 90-day warranty for non-members and 6 months for ALAS members. The exact coverage is written on your invoice.
